The recent incident of oil mixing with water in the bore wells in North Chennai is a matter of serious concern. Apart from pollution, there is also one more serious issue. The amount of loss caused by the leakage of oil. Every now and then, the oil companies increase the price of oil. We make a hue and cry whenever they increase the price. But we are not bothered to question the loss that has occurred due to this leakage and similar other leakages. Since oil in the water is due to a leak in an underground pipeline and had polluted the ground water to such an extent, atleast a few KCLs of oil would definitely have leaked.
It is also not clear whether the book entries (i.e. the opening balance and closing balance and actual stock verification) and the actual dip was compared every day before closing. If this had been done every day, the abnormal loss would certainly have been noted. From the newspaper reports, it appears that the amount of loss would run to some lakhs of rupees.
This only shows the sheer negligence on the part of oil companies who are interested only in increasing the prices from time to time and are not at all bothered about the loss caused to the nation. This loss will be borne only by the common man who has to ultimately pay the increased price. Unless stringent action is taken against the persons responsible for this, we can never change this kind of attitude prevalent in the oil companies.:wave
