    OH MY GOD!
    A Series By Varalotti Rengasamy
    Episode 8

    “OH MY GOD!”

Yamini’s scream was so loud that Arvind who was searching for something outside her room ran in.

“What happened dear? Are you all right?”

“There has been a virus attack on my laptop. Looks like I have lost all my data. My back-up is more than a month old. And I have lost the entire script of my novel, My Girl! My Mother!. It’s a six-hundred and odd page script, Arvind.”

    Arvind was also concerned.

“But Yamini you gave me a print-out of the script to read. I am half way through.”

“That’s the only thing I have left. What can I do now?”

“Don’t worry, dear. It’s just a question of keying in those six hundred pages. Thank God we have a hard copy.”

    “But Arvind, it’d take aeons.”

“I will help you dear. If necessary we can hire some data entry people to do the work. I am sure we can have it done in two weeks at the most. We can also try recovering the data from the infected hard disk. I’ll put my hardware man on the job.”

“Can you call him now, Arvind? Meanwhile I’ll start keying in the novel from the manuscript.”

“Do you know the time now? It’s almost midnight. It’s not fair to wake up the hardware engineer now. And don’t be too harsh on yourself. Just be more careful in future. I will have the latest anti-virus software loaded in your system.”

“But I was very careful, Arvind. I have the latest anti-virus software on my laptop. I update it religiously week after week. It’s not fair. Why should it happen to me!”

“You can’t confine the vagaries of life within some simple rules of fair play. Most of what’s happening in the world is not fair. But that’s from a limited point of view.

"If you have the whole picture, I mean of every atom, every molecule and of every event in the whole Universe, then I am sure you would find an overall sense of justice and fairness.”

Yamini was too vexed at that time to buy that kind of a philosophical explanation. Nevertheless she was not in a mood to counter those sane words.

    Part 2
    “Ok Arvind. Good night.”

“What are you going to do now?”

    “What else …but sleeping..”

“But honestly darling, do you think you can sleep in this condition? Your mind would be hovering around this disaster. You will think of the mammoth keying-in job again and again And you are never going to have a wink of sleep tonight. You will wake up with a bad head-ache tomorrow morning.”

“But what else can I do Arvind? You don’t want me to start the recovery work now. And you say I can’t sleep now. What the hell can I do now?”

“My psychiatrist friend used to say that when you have an overwhelming problem like this the best way to beat it is indulgence. Especially in food.”

“Hey, come on, man. What are you talking? You want me to eat my supper again? I can’t even think of that.”

“No, darling. Leave that to me. Where are the girls?”

“They are downstairs. With their grandparents.”

“Good. I’ll give you thirty minutes. Put on your best dress. We are going out.”

    “At this time? It’s midnight.”

“So what? Our Chennai roads are quite safe. And we are going to the heart of the city.”

    “ “

“You see dear, I have a contact in Park Sheraton. Mostly he works in the night. He is in charge of ice-creams. I am going to call him up now and ask him to make the most expensive, the most delicious, the yummiest ice-cream he has ever made in his life.

“When that cool stuff gets into your heart it won’t let your problems stay there. Believe me, honey, it has worked for me.”

Yamini was a little confused at first. She looked down on her body. She was not exactly fat. Her BMI was just about the right number. Even a 2 Kg increase in her weight would push her BMI beyond the line of normalcy. She had been on a diet plan for the past one month.

Arvind guessed her thoughts. He placed his hand affectionately on her shoulders.

“Come on yar! It’s okay to throw your diet plan to winds, once in a while. In fact Doctors now say that if you are very strict with your diet regimen that itself could be a cause for stress.

"Today is a special day. So get off your diet plan just for the night.”

Yamini wore a puzzled look on her face. How could he know what she was thinking?

“You will have to tell me, what should I wear for this late night party.”

“If I were you I’d go for that gorgeous golden colour <st1:city w:st="on">Patiala</st1:city> we picked up at a boutique in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Bangalore</st1:city></st1:place> for six grand last month.”

“That would be way too grand!”

“So what? You know I am going to wear the readymade Sherwani we picked up at Raymonds last week. You see wearing grand clothes at this time would be really therapeutic. Fast, girl. We don’t have much time.”

Arvind started pressing the numbers on his mobile.

    Part 3

Arvind had powerful contacts at the right places. When their Honda Accord entered the five-star hotel’s grand portico, a valet was waiting there to park their car.

As soon as the handsome couple dressed in gorgeous clothes entered the lobby the F&B Manager welcomed them with flowers. They were escorted to a special corner seat in the hotel’s large 24-hour coffee shop. Arvind’s friend, the ice-cream man, was waiting for them.

By that time Yamini’s worries were fifty percent gone. The young couple were uttering sweet nothings when suddenly their conversation stopped.

Two bearers each carrying a large ice cream bowl, the largest Yamini had ever seen, were marching in a procession towards their table. Arvind’s friend, the ice-cream chef was leading the procession.

As soon as the bowls were placed he spent five minutes with them explaining how the ice cream was prepared. And how should it be eaten.

It was not just one flavour or one taste or one colour. It was a sort of Encyclopedia of Ice creams. It had almost everything.

Yamini was so much in awe that for some time she did not even taste the dish. As soon as they were left alone Arvind gently touched her foot with his.

“Who are we waiting for? Come on, take the plunge.”

Yamini took a small portion from the corner of the bowl. The taste was simply out of the world. That part contained chilled figs soaked in honey and mixed with chocolate ice-cream.

    “OH MY GOD!”

This time the exclamation was out of happiness. She saw her watch. She uttered the same three words about an hour ago. At that time she was in fear, in pain and in trouble.

Now the same words were conveying the happiness her mind could not contain. All because of one man. Sitting in front of her with all the love in the world.

Yamini put the spoon down and grabbed Arvind’s hand.

“Give me a hundred lives, dear. Of absolute slavery to you. Even then I can’t compensate for what you did for me this evening. Where did you get so much love, Arvind?”

“That’s my ancestral property. Not self earned. KG bequeathed a part of his love to me.”

“Oh that reminds me, Arvind dear. Why don’t you tell me one of KG’s stories now? I am sure it would be even yummier than this heavenly ice cream.”

“But Yamini, are you sure you want to hear a KG story now? You know very well that his stories are quite heavy and would invariably make you cry.”

“Should I have to explain that to the nation’s finest writer? Even the saddest of KG’s stories, the story of Loganathan fills your heart with love. And the tears you shed are those of love and not of grief.

“You know something? After hearing Logu’s story I was almost floating on air for three days. Of course I used to cry whenever I uttered those one and a half lines. But my mind was light. Logu’s story is like a purgative to one’s mind. It cleanses all the undigested thoughts and frustrated desires and makes it ready to receive God’s love.”

Arvind saluted her with tears in her eyes.

“What happened dear? Why are you crying?”

“If only KG were alive today to hear your words… “

Yamini tightened her grip over her husband’s hand. They were silently indulging in the ice cream for the next few minutes.

“This is not a story but a real-life event. And you are going to meet another unforgettable character, Malya. I assure you, Yamini, this lady is as memorable as our Logu and Saravanan if not more.”

    “Who’s this Malya, Arvind?”

Arvind sighed and started a long narration.

    Part 4

KG was doing some kind of counselling and was affiliated to a number of voluntary service organisations in that capacity. Of course he was not into marriage counselling or handling of persons with mental disorders.

But there were many cases where nothing more than patient listening or at the most a few kind words, were required. And in some cases these simple things could even prevent a desperate person from killing himself.

KG was well known for his listening skills and was in demand as a Counsellor. When Arvind was old enough to take care of himself KG spent most of his spare time with these service organistaions. It was in one of those organisations that KG met Malya for the first time.

KG was summoned on a Friday evening for an “emergency counselling session” for “a troublesome patient.”

When KG reached the place the Head of the Organisation was at the gate waiting for him.

“We have this lady Malya who specifically wanted to see you. I suggest that you let this security guard sit with you in the counselling room.”

“Is she a mental patient? Does she have a history of violence?”

“No. But judging from the way she has interacted with our staff I have my own fears.”

“Look here, Madam. The relationship of a person with her counsellor is very sacred. Absolute confidentiality is the very foundation of that holy relationship. Letting somebody else in is not all right.”

“But KG Sir, we don’t want to compromise on your safety.”

“Do you have a remote calling bell?”

    “We do.”

“Then give that to me. Let this guard stand near the bell. I will close the doors but wont bolt them. If he hears the bell let him come running in.”

    Part 5

When the Head took KG to the counselling room Malya was there waiting for him. The Head did a short introduction and left the room.

KG saw the lady sitting before him. She was about forty years old. She looked very beautiful. She was dressed in a well-starched off-white cotton saree. She had straightened her hair and had trimmed her eye-brows. She looked quite gorgeous.

KG was organising his thoughts and was uttering a silent prayer before starting the counselling session.

    She blurted out.

    “Sami…”

    KG looked up.

The word ‘Sami’ literally meant God. It was used by the labourers in South Indian villages when they address their bosses. It was generally used to address the priests in the temple. Why should she choose to address KG like that..

“Sami, tell me this up front. Somebody commits a sin. And she’s given punishment. A cruel punishment rather. But can she reform herself after that and try to live a good life?

“Or should she be in hell for ever for the sin she did sometime in the past? In other words do you believe in the concept of eternal damnation, a kind of non-ending punishment?”

That was not a tough question especially for someone like KG. But the question showed that Malya was no ordinary person.

    KG’s smile was benevolent.

“I don’t Malya. I firmly believe in the fact that the act of sin in itself is its punishment. And two, the most important. We are not punished by God for our sins. We are punished by the sins themselves.

“So eternal damnation, or non-ending punishment as you put it, and a loving God cannot exist at the same time. Since I firmly believe in a loving God, I don’t believe in eternal damnation.”

“Great, Sami. I am happy I came to the right person.”

    “Why do you say that?”

“Sami, I am a call-girl. A prostitute. Or if you prefer the modern word, a commercial sex worker.”

    Part 6

    KG’s shock was quite obvious.

“But don’t worry, Sami. That’s a thing of past. I have quit my profession now. For the past six months I have not been entertaining anyone.”

Malya went on to explain how did she decided to quit that hell and lead a normal life. KG naively thought that his help is being sought for some kind of rehabilitation.

“Do you want me to find out a job for you?”

“Thanks. But no, thanks. The only wise thing I did in my life was to invest a major portion of my earnings for a rainy day. I have sufficient savings which will see me through for the rest of my life.”

“I am happy to hear that, Malya.”

“But Sami I have another burning problem for which I want your help.”

    “I am all ears.”

“So long I was active I lived in a place near Kodambakkam. Many of the practitioners of the world’s most ancient profession live in my street and the next one.

“If I continue to live there I am sure to be troubled by my old customers, pimps and the police. I want to move over to a decent residential area where I can live peacefully. But no one is willing to take me in as a tenant.”

Now that was a real problem. No house owner would be willing to let out his house to a single woman let alone a prostitute.

    KG was thinking.

“I wont blame the house-owners, Malya. Nobody would be willing to take that kind of a risk.”

“Which means I will have to continue to be in my own hell. Which means you are condemning me to eternal damnation. Which means what you said in the beginning was nothing but sentimental ********. Right?”

Malya’s eyes were red with anger.

KG now understood why the Head of that Organisation insisted on the presence of a security guard.

    Part 7
KG smiled again more to disarm her.

“Let’s be pragmatic. What’s the assurance that you won’t lapse into your old habits? And if you do, the house-owner would be in deep trouble. Under the present law he could also be charge-sheeted along with you. It’s much more complex than you think.”

“Sami, get hold of the city’s best lawyer. Ask him to draft a bond which I will sign. I will pledge all my savings in the form of bank deposits to secure that bond.

“Which means if I don’t walk my talk the house-owner can have all my money, which in many cases would be more than the value of his house. And if you want anything more to be done I am ready.”

KG was now lost in thought. Malya was eagerly looking at his face.

“Fair enough, Malya. If you have identified some houses let me know. I’ll talk to the house-owners on your behalf. I will try to convince them. I think in cases like this working for the Income Tax Department really helps.”

“Forget about convincing them, Sami. Are you convinced?”

KG looked at her face. She was rough. She was rude. So rude as to make the Head of the Organisation fear for KG’s safety.

But when KG looked deep into her eyes he could only find a sense of pain and vulnerability. The rough exterior was a kind of defence mechanism for her.

“I am convinced, Malya. Fully convinced.”

“Thanks a lot, Sami. I never thought my job would be over so soon. So what next?”

    “What are you talking about?”

“Sami, you are the house owner. I came to know from a broker that the first floor of your Triplicane house is vacant. I set up the trap for you. And you are caught.

“Now you have two options. Number one, gracefully admit your defeat and accept an ex-prostitute as your tenant.

“Number two, press that remote bell, complain to that morose lady who heads this institution that I hit you and throw me out of this place. What are you going to do?”

KG took less than ten seconds to decide.

“Your options are all wrong. Because by accepting you as my tenant, I am not defeated. Both of us have won. I thought somebody else is going to be your landlord. Now that the responsibility has fallen on me, I wish to make some changes in the terms and conditions.”

“I sort of expected that. Do you want additional security or do you want a guardian to vouchsafe my conduct or somebody else to guarantee the rent payment? Will a Doctor in Government service do?”

KG’s eyes were full of fatherly love.

“If I am going to be the landlord then I don’t want the guarantees and security.
For me your word is as good as the bond. I trust you. ”

Malya was staring at him for a while. Then without any warning she fell at KG’s feet with a great sound. KG could see her sobbing.

Malya let go all of her defences and was crying shamelessly.

“Sami, to me you are the real Sami. The God. I should have worshipped a dozen Gods since I was born. Each one of them let me down in His or Her own way.

“But Sami, you haven’t. Sami, I promise on the name of my deceased mother, my only relative in the whole world, that I will be true to my word.”

    Part 8

Malya issued a cheque for the advance payment and moved in to the first floor of KG’s house the very next week.

    KG’s problems started soon thereafter.

Two days after Malya moved in KGs next door neighbour, Chandran, an officer working for the Regional Transport Office called on KG. Chandran used to discuss a lot of religious matters with KG.

KG thought that he had come to discuss about something religious. But Chandran looked quite offended.

“KG, who’s the lady I see in the first floor?”

    “My new tenant. Mrs. Malya.”

“Do you know about her character, KG?”

“I know. She is a good woman.”

    “Do you know her antecedents?”

    “I don’t need to.”

“Please listen to me, KG. She is a woman of loose morals.”

“Oh! I didn’t know that. But Chandran, appearances are deceptive.”

“I am not talking about the appearances. I am talking out of my own personal experience. I don’t want to hide it from you, KG. I was her customer once. But that was long back.”

    KG’s face was expressionless.

“Tell me one thing, KG. When are you going to evict her?”

    “Why should I?”

“I told you she is a prostitute. I shamelessly confessed to you that I myself have availed of her services once.”

“That keeps you two in the same boat.”

“How dare you say that, KG?”
“Isn’t that obvious Chandran? If trading sexual favours for money is immoral, how can buying sexual favours be moral?”

    “But I’m a man, KG.”

    “That means..”

“Be practical. Men can be immoral, not women.”

“Ridiculous. If you don’t apply the law of morality to exactly 50% of the population how will that 50% let the other 50% be moral?”

Chandran stood up. His body was shaking in rage.

“If you don’t evict her within a week, I may have to complain to the Police that you are running a brothel in your house.”

    KG became furious.

“Then Chandran, I’ll be forced to prefer a complaint to Vigilance and have you arrested under disproportionate wealth case. I can estimate your earnings in the form of bribes to the nearest thousand Rupees.

“Remember I can create a dossier for you in the Income Tax Department. You may have to spend the rest of your life fighting the charges. It’s your call.”

    Chandran was shocked.

KG then gently told him about Malya. About her determination to lead a good life. About their moral responsibility to help her in her new life.

Chandran did not say anything. After a while a dazed Chandran got up and went away. KG knew that he was not convinced. However KG’s counter-threat about tax raid and vigilance case had forced him into an uncomfortable silence.

KG threw his weight around and sought the help of a Senior Police official who sort of instructed the jurisdictional Inspector not to entertain any complaints about KG or Malya.

    Part 9
6:30 AM. KG had finished his morning pooja and was browsing the newspapers with a cup of coffee in his hand.

    “Sami…”

KG looked up. Malya. She had taken bath and was dressed in a traditional cotton saree.

“Come in, Malya, have a seat. Want a cup of coffee?”

“No Sami. I have come here to beg for a much larger favour from you.”

    “Shoot.”

“I now have money. Thanks to your trusting me I have a very calm and peaceful life. But Sami, I don’t want to waste the time. I want to do something. Learn something. They say that you know all about God. Can you please tell me some of his stories?”

KG was moved. He started teaching Malya in all earnestness. Every day for about an hour KG would tell some story or other about God and his love.

Malya was not a passive listener. She shouted, became emotional, cried, questioned everything she heard. Sometimes KG had answers for her. Many times her remarks would simply render KG speechless.

KG told her the story of Andal. How she was born as the daughter of one of the greatest devotees of God, the Periazhwar himself. And how she used to wear the garlands intended for God. And how she fell in love with the God Himself and ultimately got married to him.

Malya was listening with rapt attention. Finally she said,

“Sami, if only I had had a father like you, I would have been an Andal myself. I had a rogue and a rapist for a father. Even to call him a father would be to insult all the loving fathers of the world.”

KG could see the scars deep inside her heart. His heart bled for the hapless girl.

    Part 10
On a Friday morning Malya had a very basic question right at the beginning of the class.

“Sami, you have been telling about all the Gods and devotees. I want to know if any woman had suffered as much as I did? I was born to a father who raped me and sold me in the market.

“And was handled like a sex-toy by all the men who came in contact with me. Men gave me nothing but pain, Sami. Only the extent and the degree were different. Is there anybody like me in your religious literature?”

KG was in tears. He placed his hand on Malya’s head. Malya shivered in pure happiness.

“Please Sami, let your hand be there for some time. I have never felt this kind of love in my life. Never in my life I have felt so protected and guarded.”

Keeping his hand on her head KG started the story for the day.

“I don’t think anybody would have suffered as much as you have. But one character that comes closest to you is Draupathi. The wife of Pandavas. I cannot bear to read the scene in which Draupathi is insulted in the <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Royal Court</st1:address></st1:street>.”

    “I know the story, Sami.”

“That scene in the <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Royal Court</st1:address></st1:street> where she is dragged to be insulted is very important, Malya. It’s not just the story of Draupathi but of every seeker, every devotee.”

“How do you say that, Sami?”

“All of us pass through that stage in varying degrees sometime or other. You see, Draupathi’s husband, the first of Pandavas, Dharma, whose duty is to protect her places her as a bet in the gambling game and loses her.

“She is let down by her husband. Duryodhana orders her to be dragged to the Court. Poor lady, Draupathi. She is having her periods and is already in a state of physical pain and discomfort.

“Duryodana’s brother Duschasana goes to her private chambers and grabs her by her long hair. Her mother-in-law Kunthi is not there in the palace at that time. Draupathi sees Gandhari, Duryodanan’s mother and falls at her feet asking her to save her.

“Gandhari not only turns her face the other side but also shouts at the hapless Draupathi, ‘You have to obey my son’s command.’ See, she is let down by someone who was supposed to play her mother’s role.
