    Hi,

Thanks Kamla for sharing the fabric softener tip.. That was very useful.

I am not sure how many of you use placemats and table cloth liners for your dining table. However here is a small tip(my own invention) :p

I have straw table mats, but the problem with it and our style of eating, we spill rice and sambhar on the mats( this applies to bamboo and the nice fabric table mats too) .. but cleaning it was a big problem because food would get between the wedges and it was very messy. (same applies to fabric ones too, where you have to keep washing them, and they lose their shine and color). Thereby I came up with this idea, I put the table mats on top of my table cloth and put the liner on top of it. So the table mats look nice, it protects the table from hot dishes being placed directly on them, and for cleaning, all that I have to do is just clean the top of the liner.. This way I preserve the beauty of my table mats and the table too. I shall post the pictures if anybody is interested.

    Regards
    Vidya

    Hi Kamala,

Thanks for the tip on moving from room to room...what do u think i did for my dec hols , when we had just moved here...my hubby said you have just moved to this new area, so go and explore and sleep in different bedrooms , so that i will anyway feel that i am on a holiday...ha ha! But these days my remote wireless connection is not working and so i am stuck in one room for my laptop ,for direct connection. In fact that is another reason why i am not always logged on.
Vidhya , that is a great idea for table mats.....by the way do you get liners here ..kamala , you may know the name for it in german, right?

And any one with good website on home gardening plz share...or is there a sub forum already? I am not a good housekeeper, so now just clearing the weeds is so time consuming...and what with the allergy probs here, i end up falling sick after that!
But some roses have bloomed and that makes me happy and want to get more actve in garden!
From home to garden...well Kamala maybe you can have another sub forum in this ...ha ha!

    Table liners..

    Dear Sudha,
Germans generally don't use table liners! They believe in using their table cloths and washing, starching and ironing them!! Must give it to them. Lifestyle, one should learn from germans. Now I have a stack of very good table linen and soon might start doing pooja to them:)) Ages ago, my iranian friend in used to get them for me from some shop and even I have found them upon searching extensively. But I doubt if you still get them there. Try asking in shops that specialise in table linen or Karstadt or Kaufhof etc. Ask for "durchsichtige plastik tischschutzdecke". Let me know if you have had any luck.
I can fully understand your gardening problems. I used to dread it as in Germany, if you have a garden, it MUST be tended to and maintained real well! Allergies make the work tougher. Can you not find someone who might help you out atleast from time to time? As for the websites, I will see if I can find any for you.
Vandhana, Sudha will not be able to watch HGTV in Germany. But Sudha, 'Dritte Kanal" usually has good instructive programmes on gardening. Check it out.

    Hi Sudha,

I don't know about Germany, but in the US, we get a product called "Round Up" which is the most effective product I have ever come across for killing very stubbord weeds. I usually buy them in Home Depot, and spray all around the mulched areas in the lawn. However you have to be careful while using because it is a general vegetation killer, so it might even spoil your nice grass. Therefore I recommend it only for very stubborn weeds and in mulched areas.

Before coming across Round up, I used this other method of killing weeds. I pour real hot boiling water over the weeds and it is as effective as any other weed killer. I microwave the water so I can save on gas and pour them directly on the weed.. This requires some patience but is very effective.

Hope you found this information useful.

    Regards
    Vidya

    Make overs

    Dear Kamla & Vandhana,

I regularly watch a prog on Travel & Living, WHILE YOU WERE OUT..
the make overs are good sometimes, but they don't seem to surprise the inmates, I feel. Even I'm not sure if I'd like a makeover cause I'm too sentimental & each & everything that I've got at home has such sentimental value & I might not part with it even if its old-fashioned or whatever

Kamla, your thread seem to coincide with Interiors Week programme on Travel & Living. The beauty of this programme is, here the team design each room & start from scratch , for eg. for kitchen - they start with the Layout, fixtures & fittings, Lighting, Surfaces (floor), storage, etc. Each topic is again divided into so many sub-topics & give us a beautiful insight on designing / choosing / planning, etc. get to learn a lot.
