It is very unfortunate that the old man had to undergo all this.Very sad.

One thing I have noted about developed countries is that , they do not harm their people(meaning citizens of the country). They protect their own people , inside or outside the country.

I think we Indians are more racist trying to put down ourselves based on everything possible ...religion , caste , state , colour, creed , etc..etc..

The call said "A skinny black man walking through the neighborhood and looking into houses".

The man said "No English" and "India". If the officers can't understand the difference between black and Indian and can't differentiate between a young and an old person, then the officer seriously need some repercussions to really understand it.

This reminds of something I witnessed a few weeks ago. DH was driving, kids were in the car with us. We stopped at a light and I saw a guy on a bike(big huge heavy bullet like one) being stopped by a cop car at the opposite intersection. He stopped, put his hands up in the air, clear for me to see from the other end. Within a few secs, officers were out of their cars, pushed him to the ground, his bike fell on top of him and then three officers jumped on him while a fourth handcuffed him from under the bike. I screamed loudly and of course was shaking till I got home. The kids were afraid. My older one saw it. She didn't understsnd why throw someone to the ground so violently.
According to me it's human rights violation right there, jumping on a bike with a guy beneath it. Well apparently he had committed a major crime(more than 5-6 cop cars). I still fail to see the need to do all of that when the guy stopped and had his hands clearly up in the air. I just cannot agree with the split second rationale anymore. It's much deeper than that. The cops have started responding aggressively, using excessive force when not necessary and hurting and sometimes killing people and getting away with it.

Agree with you. Either these people were totally ignorant or they just needed a scapegoat.

The injured man does not look like a black person. He said he was from India. How can these idiots think he was black? He was not even looking into houses, but walking on the streets. The manner in which they dealt with him, with so much force, without caring to confirm any thing, is simply unacceptable.

The officer in question, has been guilty of doing this before too. Totally unprovoked attack on an innocent man. Policemen acting like they are above law and not enforcers of law.

See the video. In this case, the police reaction was totally unprovoked.

    Dear Akanksha,

This recent incident has of course sent disbelief especially across the Indian community in the US! The visiting granddad/dad looks so frail that it is hard to believe that two healthy looking armed policemen would consider him dangerous enough to throw him on the ground and handcuff him the way they did going by the video.

The police brutality has become the talk in the recent past. I wonder why they react so brutally? I agree with Viswamitra that the police force should revamp their training and teach the young policemen that one should not reach to the gun so hastily.

This incident is a shame from anyone's point of view and a young man loses both his job and credibility for life. More importantly, an elderly gentleman suffers forever as does his family. The young son looked distraught and heartbroken in his interview.

World is changing rashly and violence is everywhere, almost at our doorsteps. Very disturbing.

    L, Kamla

With the excessive use of force cases happening over the last few years, I am sure the training must have been in place. Irrespective of training, the matter here is more of common sense. I am not sure what crime was committed here. Is walking on the street and looking at houses a crime? If people are offended by people looking at their houses, they should erect a huge fence and protected by Alarms, dogs, security etc.

I am not even sure that the office will lose his job when officers are acquitted even in cases of killing innocent citizens.

Funny he didnt have enough English to comply with the police, but certainly knew how to quickly get a lawyer and file a lawsuit.

He was described as a black man with a toboggan on.....so skin color wasnt the only description...and toboggans are not normal wear in the USA.

He was repeatedly warned to stop pulling away and trying to walk away from the police. They warned him they were going to put him on the ground.

I mean, they are questioning this guy, he cant speak English, and he is disobeying the policeman's orders because of his inability to speak English.

Then he reaches in his pocket while two police are next to him?

I mean, it sucks that it happened, but can you blame the police when they are dealing with someone who wont obey commands and is reaching into their pockets?

Its not like they charged out of the car and tackled the guy, they approached him calmly asked him some questions, but whose fault is the language barrier? What is he going to do if the baby is sick, call 911 until someone who speaks Telugu answers?

I think there is an awful lot of people trying to "get bones out of an egg" here.

Oh, and to make it even worse...the guy has no insurance...i.e. the American taxpayer gets to foot the bill for his surgeries and probably his lawyer.

Maybe the next time I get stopped by a cop, I will try the whole "No English" thing, sounds like its winning the lottery.

    @ sherlock

victims son filed the lawsuit. It is perfectly possible for a father not to know English and the son knows English and also knows about the legal recourse for such acts of police

are you trying to give an excuse that police repeatedly warned him. Oh really, then why was th cop arrested and why was he suspended from his job. Because the U.S. law too forbids the police from acting like this cop did. Not knowing English is no a valid reason to paralyze a man

American tax payer is going to foot out the bill for his surgeries because of the aggressive acts of the cop and NOT because the old man came to US without insurance. Americans tax payers will foot out the bills because a cop paralyzed the man even though the situation did not warrant it and NOT because the old man was taking a walk in the neighborhood.

@sherlock really you want to win the lottery being paralyzed for life? Sure go ahead.

Do you sincerely believe that a french person (who can't speak/understand english) would have been treated in the same fashion as this person?

I will tell you my story.
We were coming from LA to SFO and driving at night. Our tire got punctured on the freeway and we pulled to the shoulder and were waiting for AAA to come and help.
In the meantime, a white police officer pulled over. He checked our documents and asked all irrelevant questions - where are you working? why did you go to LA? How long you have been staying in US? what is your citizenship, etc. Then the officer asked my husband to come out and take a DUI test by making him walk in a straight line. Having found nothing, the officer left, not even waiting for the AAA to show up. This was like 2 AM or 3 AM at night.

So some police officers are like that. I have also seen some police officers who help people change tires. So it depends on the police officer.

It is difficult for anyone to judge such incidents unless something happens to us.
