I usually am too catious when it comes to vehicles. I always have felt a danger from them. As famously said
' The chief danger in life is that you may take too many precautions.':hide:
I had just looked back and started to walk and there came a bike and hit me from I dont know where !
I hit my head and face hard on the ground. Closing my eyes wondering wether I head ontoheaven
or hell !! Was it disturbing when I saw the sky and thought I must surely be in hell as I was convinced since I was a kid that the sky is ' Actual Heaven ' !! I saw my mom next to me and was sure the place she is must be heaven !!
:ideaBut bang.. I was in a hospital and found myself gazing at the window ! I felt empty in my mouth. I
had lost four of my front teeth !!! God ! what have you done to a Dentist I thought ! I could have been hurt any kind except this I said loud ! How can I go back to my patients with artificial teeth ?? How can i set an example of healthy teeth from now on ?? I
    was devastated !!
Thought of ending my life when the nurse shouted my name ! I thought she must be nuts and turned around to see my mom asking me wether I decided to sleep the whole day like this !!!
Man , that was the worst dream I had I thought. Nightmares I have heard but this was superlatively worse !! I asked Mommy do the dreams we have in the day come true ?? She said " Dreams dont come true ! Else they wont be called so " Now go treat some people with pain " !!
Darn ! Dreams dont come true I jumped with joy :banana
Was wondering what happens to those people who
lose teeth in accidents . Must be real sad. I drove to my clinic and was a lil over cautious on the road .( The real me !! )
I got a call from my junior worried " Ma'am how long would you take to reach here ?? " I said in 2 mins and drove like Schumacher ! I was there in 30 secs !!
Driving in Bangalore is not easy.. believe me! But my junior's worried voice kept lamenting ! I took the stairs fast as I could and what do i see !! Blood all over the waiting area !!
I wasnt too shocked.. Blood is something we doctors see everyday but.. this kind.. I rushed in jus with a quick prayer to God and found this man bleeding like hell !
He met with an accident , Ma'am ,
my junior said quickly ! I was too confused and shocked as my dream reeled thru' my mind. I rushed near him with gloves and apron and found he had all his front teeth lost. I said do you have them or did you lose. He said with a smile behind the pain.. I collected and got them, Doctor ! I said very good.. The teeth even if it is avulsed ( totally out from the socket ) can be fixed back into our mouth within 1/2 - 45 mins after mishap. Just that if it is a road accident it should not have been rubbed onto the mud or dust. Our tooth ie., the root surface is attached to the bone by means a fibre like strings . These are called Periodontal Fibres .
(Perio - around. Dontal - tooth. ) As far as one does not rub the surface of the tooth it is alright. Coz the fibres have an ability to regenerate once it is back to the socket. If the mishap happens indoors then the tooth can be quickly put into milk or even saliva
and and rush as fast as you can to the dentist !
I cleaned and nursed his wound while my junior just put the tooth in solution to remove the dust. We put the teeth back after removing a lil of the biting portion and wired them around.Splinted (attached ) the teeth together so that it doesnt move when the bone formation happens in time . He had to be on fluid diet for some days because even if the front teeth a'int used in chewing it may touch each other when the back teeth grinds. This is also why I
removed a lil of biting portion to relieve the bite ( as we dentists call it ) . Put few stiches on his lower lip as it was cut. Checked his pulse and asked him if he had been hurt anywhere else. He said he hit his face only right on the ground and nothing else. I
cleaned the bruises on his palm and hands. Gave him a tetanus as he had not taken for more than 5 years.
WHO (World Health Organisation ) claims that one shot of Tetanus gives you a protection for 5 years is what a doctor had told me. I havent confirmed it yet. But six months protection between two shots I have read in a journal . I got him something to drink and
checked his pulse again. Told him to visit the hospital however. He smiled.. I just got the best treatment and care I had to.., Madam ! I still insisted.. Taking down a few instructions from my junior and a prescription from us he left. The teeth
however would go for a Root canal as it is dead. The only advantage here is you have got back your natural teeth and just need to go for Root Canal Treatment and crowns for them. Had he lost them.. the bone had to redesign in that area and he had to go for an aritficial teeth with the help of two healthy teeth next to the empty space or for implants individually which is very very expensive in a country like India with no Dental Insurance yet. In his case it was more cosmetic too. He came back religiously later for his treament and flashes a dazzling smile now !!
Thank You, God.. atleast I could help him get his lovely smile back !! Bow

    Dear Drpreethis

I read the whole post in one go. When I read the first part about you losing your teeth in an accident, I was thinking "Oh No". Thank God it was a just a bad dream or premonition of the patient's accident.
I was told that the Tetanus shot lasts for 10years. Is it different now?

    Love

    Dear Sundarusha ,

I am not too sure of the 10 year protection from Tetanus ! WHO comes out with so many of them that you need to keep track every day !!! :) I still get goose bumps when i think of that dream !! Thanx for reading thru and dropping your comment !!

Drpreethis....OMG ...thankfully it was a dream...
But so what if a dentist had artificial teeth...atleast it will not be too obviously recognised....haven't we seen eye specialist doctors wearing high powered lens :):)
So good to hear about you and everyone in your profession bringing back that beautiful smile on faces...in all ways possible....Thanx for that mention of the actual tooth being put in place with some surgery..I was ignorant of that so far...And yes...I guess..it is adviced not delay in replacing a tooth lost within 6 months....is it true?
good to have a dentist with us....

    Thanx Saraswathi..
It is like this..however good and natural the artificial teeth is made to look like, a dentist will know it is artificial in a fraction of second !!
Maybe because we do it day in and day out ! :-D
A patient will not get his teeth extracted from me if it could be saved even if I am held at gunpoint :spin!! I am such an adamant dentist so losing teeth is like one of the biggest losses for me !! :) :biggrin2:
What you said is true.. There wont be an empty space for more than 6 months in our mouth !! Our tooth gives us an option you fill it or I shall and drifts to the empty space !! :banana

I find your blogs very useful that way. In my experience you can tell a good dentist from the quality of work that they do.. and I have been fortunate that the few times I went to one, they have been talented. Do keep blogin.. love to read your blogs. More likea treasure trove of infos:)

    Dear Chitra ,

Oh Thanx a ton for having said all that about me ! Friendliness is one of the few best compliments I have always got to hear from my patients ! I kind of believe that to understand a patient we need to become one each time.. and I never fail to flash my best smiles when they leave. :) Because of ravishing parents I have a very lovely smile and giving one alike to others.. has always been my dream !! Thank you once again !!
