    Hi Indialife,

Do you use chana daal for idli/dosa? Or is it a typo?

    Hi all,
I am interested in finding how people are managing idli/dosa without idli rice (ponni parboiled). For regular cooking I use Royal Basmati from Costco and that is not a problem. But my store of Ponni is fast depleting...

Sri, I haven't seen Blue ribbon brand in Costco here - will check out in other stores. Is it long grained rice? What proportion do you use it in? Do you use a table top grinder or mixie? Are the idlies soft? Sorry to ask so many questions, but my family is big on soft idlies :)

    Hi,
Ponni idli rice is not at all available in our area. We tried in the
pioneer blvd., Artesia also. I have only less stock at home. I have
to go for long grain. I don`t know how this will work, because we used
to make soft idlies like jasmine (maligaipoo idli)

    Hi friends,

I used mahatma brand long grain rice for dosa. It turned out to be excellent. No smell.

    The proportion was;

    3 cup - rice
    1 cup - thick poha
1 handful - whole white urid dhal
    1 tsp - fenugreek seeds

I soaked everything together for 3 hrs and ground in the indian grinder.

Yes Pavithra, Blue ribbon is long grain rice...I use 3:1 proportion (3 rice, 1 dal), I am using mixie only, have been using black and decker blender earlier, now using prethi mixer...I find my idlis soft, but the thing is you will have to put extra efforts to make then soft...I take more time to grind urud dal then while using a grinder...no problem dear, all your questions are welcome, after all we help each other in IL, thats what IL is for...

Hi, I am living in Dallas. No more sonamasoori rice here in many main stores, for example subzi-mandi, Taj imports etc. But in few stores sona masoori, ponni raw rice available. 20 lbs $35 for ponni raw rice. 20lbs $33 for sona masoori. that too few bags available. I am surpraised and bought some unknown brand long grain parboiled rice 20lbs for $22. It is not sticky but big grains and no taste with rasam, sambar etc. I am going to use it for Idli and thinking of what rice to buy for daily use.
Do anyone know when will we get in normalprice? Store people says there will be no imports until next year, is it true? Do I need to store some bags for $30+?

You do get Idli rava from indian store. I soak Urad dal for 8 hrs and grind it. later soak idli rava in water.after 15 min add the idli rava to urad dal paste and add salt.
This is the method my mom makes idlis and easier compared to making with rice and tastes wonderful too.
