Hi Kads, I hope the foll. site may be very useful for u to teach your toddler,it is Learn to Read at Starfall - teaching comprehension and phonics It teaches all phonic sounds ,really a gr8 sight.I feel,u will surely like the site.
hi , i have a 20 month old daughter. i tried to teach her abcs with the books but she never showed interest and always sits in the kitchen with some vessels or the magnets (fruits like) which will stick on the fridge. then i decided to get her some thing a magnet kind of abcs and to my surprise when i went to babies r us i got what i wished for. magnetic abcs which will fit on the fridge and u can play it anywhere. it will sing abc song and if u press each letter it will teach u phonics and now she got involved in it and can identify and tell abcs . i am very happy abt it. leap frog "fridge phonics" is the name of the toy. anu
Really these magnetic ABCs are very useful. My son who is 3 years old started identifying ABCD, Colours, shapes, 123 when he was 2 years and 2months old with the help of a video CD which i bought for him. Also, I sit with him with the newspaper, and ask him to identify the letters. After he identifies, ask him the related question, like "A for what?", etc. Even in kitchen, while cooking, asking the colour / name of the vegetable, shape of a plate, etc. helps them to pick up easily. Also, u can teach counting by asking them to identify how many vessels in the kitchen, etc. I tried this, and my son has learnt counting from 1-10 before even he started going to his play school. Also one more way is to put all the magnetic letters down, and call out a letter or a number and ask the kid to pick up that and put it on the fridge. That way learning is faster. Wooden puzzles also help. Happy teaching!! Subha

Hi, I got ABC alphabets stickers and stick them in the wall. I taught my daughter one new alphabet everyday. Next day I asked to identify the alphabet which was taught on previous day. Within a month she identified all the alphabets. I started to teach at 19th month. One thing -- we have to give lots of encouragement to create the interest in them.`
Thank you Vijubala for sharing this site. Seems very useful and interesting. BTW, whats the ideal age to start teaching this?
another thing, CDs are good but to practice practice, whenever ur out or browsing thru the magazine ask the letters at random. my baby though new the alphabets by heart at 2 years, she had trouble recognizing it if i asked her at random. so this method really helphed her
