Oiling the hair too much is not a very good option. It messes with the natural oil balance it the hair. And washing hair at regular intervals will be required.

Don't comb the hair too often in a day, because combing cause friction and breaks the hair which turns into frizz. And while removing knots please don't be too rough by pulling it with the comb, it will break. Make it into many sections and comb them slowly.

Try a wooden comb sometimes. It does help rather than plastic. I have tried this and helps.

Don't comb the hair too tight or too loose. Pulling the hair too much damages it.

Sometimes curly hair tends to lose moisture, conditioning the hair would be helpful.

Comb the hair before washing, shampooing will be easy.

As for haircut I used to have short bob cut due to its maintenance issues. If the hair is too thick reduce the volume by step cut but be careful too deep steps leads to problems during plaiting, which will damage the hair that pops out of the plait. I'm not sure if schools still follow the 2plait system, if yes deep steps wouldn't be good option.
