    Hi all,

Happy to announce the birth of my baby boy 'Sanjay' on 23 nov 09,at 7:34 pm. Baby is calm, doing well and weighs 2.76 kg.

My actual due was dec 1. My waters broke on 20 nov friday. I went to the hospital but they asked me to come when contractions are strong. I was not dilated at all then. I came back and on saturday and sunday contractions were stronger and dint have any sleep. I called the delivery suite and told them contractions were 10 mins each. They asked me to call when they are 5 mins each.Again on sunday evening they were 5 mins apart but when I called they asked me to come where they were 3 every 10 mins. At 1pm on monday morning I couldnt bear the pain so decided to go straight. Then they said I was 4 cm dilated.

I was drowsy so they put me on pethidine.I fell asleep till mid afternoon. When I woke dilation were 8 cm but not 100% yet. so was given gas and air, breathing techinques to follw. At 3 pm I decided to go for epidural but they scared me so asked me to wait till 4pm to see if its 100% dilated. I prayed and at 4 it was 100% dilated. they asked me to push but baby was head down but was moving and was sideways. so until 5 they tried and decided i need to try forceps and vantouse.

They took me to operation theatre and tried instrumental delivery but that also failed since moving baby was difficult. So when all hopes lost they decided to carry an emergency C section . So had to undergo that for a long labour. But at the end of it , it was all worth my little one *cries*

Thanks all for all the support provided.Just got discharged from hospital and baby is doing fine. Only stress for me now is that I am not able to breast feed due to flat nipples. Have been bottle feeding but not very happy. Here all are scaring me and telling me not to bottle feed. Looking for your advice and suggestions here.

    Regards
    PW

There is no doubt that breastmilk is the best food for infants, designed as it is to cater to the very specific nutritional needs of growing babies. However, breastfeeding is not something that comes naturally to every new mother, for a number of different reasons. I believe in respecting the choices made by individuals, and that goes double for the choices made by new mothers at a stressful and challenging time in their lives.

If you want to breastfeed, there are lactation specialists and other resources you could use to enable you to do that. However, if you choose not to (or cannot), there is nothing wrong with formula-feeding, in my opinion. It is not clear from your post whether you are not happy with "bottle-feeding" (I'm assuming formula, and not pumped breastmilk) because YOU want to breastfeed, or because all those around you are "scaring" you.

If it is the former, then please get help, and I'm sure you can remedy your problem (there are things you can to to correct flat nipples). However, if it is the latter, I would recommend politely telling everyone that you will take their "advice" into account, and then you go ahead and do what makes you feel comfortable and what you deem best for your baby. No one can know exactly what your situation is, and they are certainly not able to substantially shoulder some of the burden that troublesome feeding can be.

I have a five-month-old baby, and she is formula-fed. She is happy, well-adjusted, is growing very well (she's in the lower percentiles for weight but in the 93rd percentile for height), and has been sleeping through the night since she was three months old. She has not ever had a fever, congestion, cold, or any other health-related issue, apart from one bout of diaper rash which cleared up in 48 hours. She has not had diarrhoea, constipation, or any other digestive problems. I'm not sure what the people around you are scaring you about, but formula-feeding is not the demon a lot of people make it out to be.

Like I said, if you really want to breastfeed, do everything you can to make it happen. There are quite a few helpful breast-feeding champions here on IL (Tikka is particularly well-informed and supportive). Whatever choice you make, however, remember that it is your choice to make. Those around you may mean well when they foist their opinions and recommendations on you, but I would say that you should trust yourself as the best judge of what is good for you and your baby.

I wish you all the best - enjoy your baby, and your new role as mother. Sometimes it may not seem like it, but it really is the most wonderful and exciting time ;)

P.S. Here is a fair and balanced discussion of the pros and cons of both breast-feeding and formula-feeding.

    http://kidshealth.org/parent/food/infants/breast_bottle_feeding.html#

Many children have been formula-fed and gone on to live healthy, productive, happy lives. If you continue formula-feeding, please don't feel guilty about the choice you have made.
