    rakhi,
i liked the capsicums a lot.
i have been toying with the idea of gardening, but dont where to start.
first of all, i live in a apartment and have one balcony to use for gardening.
i dont have backyard to make compost of my own.
i can spend only 30 mins of my time and that too in the night after i come back from my office.

inspite of all these blockers, i want to grow vegetables on my own.
can you please suggest some way of doing it....

    Thanks a lot Chitra :)
    Thank you Geetha :)
You already said that before...but thanks again Sahil!
Thats great Sudha!I tried growing tomato's indoors but its not working out. So, now I have to wait for winter.
Thank you manalimanpj. I love capsicum too; also, you get the produce fairly quick.
    Thanks veena
Thanks Chitra. Ya, normally I buy compost in bulk every alternate years. This was my first attempt. But its hard to make in large quantities.
Thanks Mahi. You should try too :)
    Thanks ipsi :)
chippagiri, thank you. If your balcony gets at least 3-4 hours of direct sunlight, you can grow a few plants there. Also, since you will not be having many pots, you dont need 30 mins daily. You might need a max of 5-10 mins to water and de-weed, thats all.

My sister in HYD also has a small balcony and she gets 4 hours of sunlight there. You can grow whatever you want but below was the list I gave to my sister as she was interested in putting the 5 pots to maximum use.

    1. hybrid tomato plant in a big pot.
    2. Green Chili plan in a medium pot
    3. Curry leaves on a medium pot.
    4. Mint/pudina in a small pot
    5. Coriander in a small pot.

With the above, she never buys chilies, curry leaves, mint or coriander from outside anymore. She also gets at least 3-5 tomatoes a week. Hope this helps. This list is just an example, you can grow whatever you want to.

Srama- I have a 13 gallon compost bin too and it does not stink at all. Instead of gettin a regular compost bin (which can be quite pricey), I got a large trash can for about $12 and drilled some holes on lid and botton for circulation.

I started with a newspaper or two (no glossies) some dried leaves, and soil (all three filled up to half). After that added kitchen waste (veggie peels, fruits, egg shells, tea leaves and coffee pd ground). Every couple of days just roll the can so the contents mix. I also use a garden fork to mix as well. I have never had smell issues.

If you need to speed the composting process, add earthworms from a garden store or fishing store. When it is ready, it just looks like black rich soil with no nasty smell.

Hi AChitra- Yes most townships also have free compost available for its residents. I just do it to recylcle the kitchen waste and plus its just fun to make your own too :)

Hi Srama- Yes you should try it. I promise you there will be no smell. Just mix the contents-it also speeds up the process.

Thanks for your wishes :) Just a few weeks to go....
