Today I was reading in Pet space about dogs best friend. This got me to write this about my dogs best friend.

When I decided to have dogs I use to stay in Bangalore. There was a lady living in the opposite house who got herself a dog. She picked up this pup from the slum nearby. She use to take good care of him gave him the necessary vaccines and neutered him etc. She use to let him loose during the day and in the nights inside her gate. So he was more of a road dog than her dog because everyone on this street use to feed him. He would go and sleep in one house at a time. He was found at a different house at different times. Two years down the line this lady had an untimely death. Her house people stopped taking care of this dog. It did not matter to this dog because he was already half street dog. My daughter and me called this fellow “Jack Pot”. This is because he use to fit anywhere.

After this ladys death Jack pot did not have a place to sleep in the nights. So he started sleeping outside my door. The whole night he use to be there. When I take my dogs for a walk they tend to bark and snarl at every other dog on the road. But they were the best of friends with Jack Pot. They use to play with him when they see him. Jack Pot would faithfully escort us during our morning and evening walk. The best thing is he would chase away any dog or human that came a few feet near us. Many times I have got scolded by strangers who did not know he was a stray.:bonk Jack Pot had a way of hiding :hide:from people who did not like him. I use to stay on the second floor and my house owner hated him. So if he hears the foot steps of that man this dog would be seen nowhere. This always amused me.

Well I too had to shift to Chennai and moved. My daughter stayed in the same house so she fed him whenever he came to sleep outside. Later she too moved out of that house. Though we felt sad for Jack Pot we could do nothing much. Many times I have thought about him. This was 5 years back.

Recently in September I visited Bangalore and went to my old locality. All along we were talking about Jack Pot and wondering how he was. But when we reached our road, I saw an old man taking Jack Pot for a walk on a leash. I was really happy that my dogs best friend had finally found a home in his old age.:)

I too have two dogs at my home one is mom and the other is its pup. The pup has grown larger than his mom he is just 1.5 years old . I luv dogs very much . they are very faithful to human being. You can read out their mind from their expression. When we scold them their eyes will move one side ha ha just try it .When you touch them they feel pampered like children. they are very innocent , Your description is really a touching one

    Dear Priya,

Thanks for your reply. I have been having dogs since I was a kid and am really attached to them. They can understand your every mood very well. I had a dog called Mani when I was a kid. When my dad scolds him he use to go to our friends house and stay there. My Dad has to go there and plead with him and ask him to come back home. If my dad does not go, he would stay there for 2 days before returning.

    Regards,
    Uma

My pet dog with a sweet tooth loves jaggery. She used to go to my neighbor's house where jaggery is kept in the lowest rack of their kitchen shelf. She will point at the box and bark and aunty will give her a piece.

After eating, aunty will call her to play and spend some time. But our cunning madam will escape and come home. So aunty will give jaggery in increments promising more....then madam will play till all the jaggery pieces from aunty's hand are over. Then escape immediately.... :)

    Hi uma,

Great to read the real life story of a loving doggie called Jackpot.I was really distressed to read the part where you all moved away and did not know the fate that befell Jackpot ....and then came your 'lived happily ever after' ending to the narrative.Happy to know that he found another human who cared for him....you must have all felt so releived too .

Hi anyone with a farm who can keep a mother dog and her pups. All her pups were killed in accidents last two times.. except one daughter who is now 1 yearold. Anyone who can keep her and her pups for life? She deserves her pups. She looks like a beagle but is a stray
