My days are numbered

GP,

Wow what a fantastic write-up about numbers.:thumbsup Who would have thunk it that numbers could be so fascinating.

I work with numbers all the time. I am a CA and when I tell others my profession, almost everytime I get a reply like "then you must be really good at Maths haan"...far from it. I am very good at Numbers but not good at Mathematics. The very mention of Maths tunes me off. I cannot for the life of me understand logarithms, probability or for that matter logic. :rotfl

Numbers excite some of us here actually, in the A-z thread of the games forum, we are so excited when the post reaches a milestone like 1000, 2000 and so on. Right now I am excited and anxious as to who will post the 5000th entry there. :rotfl

Thanks for the wonderful post and I am really awestruck by how nicely you have written all about Numbers.:thumbsup

Dear GP

It is intriguing that a man of your age who should be talking about figures should be talking about numbers! I know some men of my own age group who are obsessed with ‘figures’ and are salivating about them but you are only looking at them as mere numbers and not as figures! I have always been trying to figure out why some men are obsessed with figures till their dying day. Just give them three numbers and they immediately convert them into figures!

Because of these incorrigible men, there are numerous limericks based on numbers and most of them are absolutely dirty! With great difficulty I have selected the least dirty to show how corrupt mathematics has become! This is how it goes:

A mathematician called Able,
Made love to a young girl named Mabel,
They hadn't a bed,
So made use instead
Of an old mathematical table!

But GP, you possess a noble soul. You look at numbers with the purity of heart that is so typical of Mathematicians. You have given them the importance they deserve by pointing out their connections to the entire gamut of our life’s activities, not leaving even the spiritual side! But I must draw your attention to the fact that the clichéd phrase ‘Days are numbered’ need not always relate to someone who is scheduled to kick the bucket shortly. On the contrary, this phrase is hardly used when talking about such guys. This is used more in connection with guys who have fallen out with the bosses, actresses who are superannuating or a politician who prefers to live on the wrong side of law always. It will certainly NOT apply to you!

Hi GP,

First of all a hearty hi from me as this is the first time I am interacting with you.But yes, i did read some of your blogs and enjoyed the ones that had the sudden twist in the end hahah.

though I have always had a fascination for numbers and teach math on almost a daily basis :hide: i would never have thought there are so many aspects of it and that it figures so much in our daily life.

On the subject of numbers..i like the no 13 (though it is considered unlucky for most and lucky for some)because it is my dob.also i am still in awe of the number called "infinity".

I always enjoy the expression on my students faces when i tell them the placement of zero in a number changes the value so much.See " 00005 is so much lesser than 50000" and they look at me as if I have explained some profound theory to them :biglaugh

Anyway,i do hope that your days here are not numbered and that you have a long fun filled innings.

This was mind boggling indeed

Not one for numbers, I, like some others here, am surprised that I enjoyed reading about them so much and ofcourse, the credit (score) surely goes to you!!

I have often found myself in awe of writers playing around with words and have called them 'wordsmith'. But this is the first time I have seen someone play around with numbers...Numbers?! Such a boring thing otherwise...and you made numbers seem such fun What are you...a 'numbersmith' of the ek nambari kind??!!

Not only have you excited so many of us with this write up, you have even sent Cheeniya sir into naughty thoughts..tsk tsk tsk !:rotfl

As I read something more came to mind ......
Education - quality getting diminished (or already done?) but everyone so mindful only of marks. Number - your score definitely plays a role in fetching u a seat to College or Professional Courses.
Horoscopes - Saturn in 7 - Rahu in 5 and what not? That too astrologers never seem to agree on the same number.
Numerology - Mani becoming Money or Manni (somebody may think Bhabi) Murugan becoming Mourugane!!!!!!!!
Dishes - Chicken 65 !!!!
Hot drinks - !/4, 1/2 !!!!!!!!!

Anyway thought provoking! Thats abt all for the present. Shall get back if something more strikes.

Greenplanet,
Numbers..um ..I also like to play with numbers..as I had just started using the sewing machine...after a loonnnng break..many calculations..how much should be the length, width, etc...where a commotion runs through your mind..
To keep our minds working, I read somewhere, you can add the 'plate no' of the vehicle before you...which I am religiously following, don't know whether it helps my mind to work or not..:biglaugh

One day when I was taking to my son, letting him know, in how many years he would be going to college, he suddenly told me...Amma, your age would be 'x' ille at that time...um...maybe he is also into number game..

Dear Greenplanet ....

I have no words to say as everyone befoe me have spoken what all i had in mind when i read your post.
speaking of numbers ... my family is full of auditors ... almost 200 must be there ... so even in a casual talk we speak of the IT act numbers and about the method of doing with the numbers ... we normally twist the end with our humour or pull someone's leg
but yours is different and an eye opener to many ... lets try to save the greenplanet ...will join hands with you...
