    iron is essential nutrient for the body.
    the main function of the iron is binding oxygen to the blood cells.
    iron supports oxygen transport to every cell in the body.
    other functions of iron is
    formation of rbcs
    development and functioning of the brain
    regulation of body temperature
    fecilatates the muscle activity
    supports the immune system
    potential users
    adolescent girls:loss of iron 60mg every month during menstrual cycle
    pregnant women:increased blood volume leads to higher iron requirement and foetus and placenta need their own iron supply,both these factors make high iron requirement.
    anemia is most prevalent nutritional deficiency in india.
    more than 60%of indian women are affected by anaemia .
    70 to 90% pregnant women are affected by anaemia .
    65 to 70% adolescent girls are affected by anaemia.
    60% children in india suffer from iron deficiency anaemia.
    there are two types of iron intake ie.dietary iron and iron supplements
    dietary iron in nonveg is meat,liver,spleen.
    veg sources are cereals,tomatoes,apricots,parsley,spinach,dried coconut,olives,dried currents lentil sprouts and beans.
