I have known a family with spinster daughter of 40 + financially sound moved to Nana Nani Coimbatore. They claim to be their living in retirement home that take care of all their needs is peaceful free of burdens and freedom from dependence . The parents tried their best to marry off their daughter but she remained steadfast like Avvaiyar of yore!
Thyagarajan ji, First of all, thank you so much for the reply. I have a few questions I would like to ask. Pls forgive me if I am irritating you with all my questions. I don't know from where I can get an active answer other than here. => I would like to know how much should one have to be called financially sound? => Was the daughter (though only in her 40's) allowed to stay along with them in that retirement home? Is she a job holder? => Are you or anyone you know is aware of any similar retirement homes (outside Tamil Nadu) for people who are not so well off and are not having anyone to turn to for help in time of need as they lost such close people during COVID?
@daisy2015 I a glad to see you responded to my last fb here and you are welcome always to put whatever queries & apprehension that comes to your mind in respect of my posts and or feedback. IMHO, as long as basic needs are met with income generated beating the current inflation, then one take it as “financially sound”. This is what I heard from them. I presume she continue with her WFH. I wish I know. But I would suggest a search in google would yield positive information. Even if there is a rule against keeping grown ups children, with money & influence and a tad special efforts one can get the desired OK FOR IT. Regards
lets do the numbers setup base - assumptions you are not working - income - 0 healthy own home location - medium cost of living - usa now expenses 1 - home taxes - $11k per year - $1000 per month 2. utilities - internet / gas / power / phone - $700 per month 3. food - you do not go outside , cook yourself -- $600 per month ( milk / vegetables 4. vehicle - you drive - gas - $100 per month 5. health insurance - you do not work - asumme government is not helping -- $1000 per month 6. auto insurance -- about - $200 per month this is what i can think of - could be more -- so - like -- $3500 this assumes - you do not have any health issues/ vehicle random expenses. you do not take vacations. just bare minimum . make an excel sheet, like this you. will have your answer.
this is the most accurate statement. the number does not matter. the freedom where you do not have to worry about the consequences of your spending is what is. now that limit is your personal limit.
The term Spinster is largely outdated and considered offensive or insensitive in modern contexts, often replaced by neutral terms like "single woman" or "bachelorette," Just for your information and not to offend. Thank you.
Hi thanks. I never knew it. I am old timer. Anyways I stand corrected . I must do as Roman's(USA) when I'm in Rome (USA). REGARDS. GOD BLESS
One day i heard elders say "nowadays you must have money even to die" and i remember laughing over it and asking how come we need money to die. My grandmother said "when we used to cook anything special in our times, we used to share with our next door neighbors and still it would be enough for us and our neighbors would share with us. if anyone has any issue or anyone would be needing care or any other matter, all would be involved in own capacity to help but now everything has changed; nowadays everything is valued with money, so if today you have really good children and relatives thank Almighty otherwise dead body would be there and no one would do anything because it requires money to bath, shroud and bury the dead so you need money even to die". I may not have believed or understood her words then but i do now. so yes though money is not everything and we are answerable how we spend it but it is one of the biggest blessings in life.
@Yumna - Your brooding is perfect here. Since land has become precious and expensive, in Japan the space for burial is on a huge premium and so many book their “place” in Advance. A Buddhist funeral with all the bells and whistles will cost between 2–3 million yen. One can get cheaper ones done starting at around a ¥ million. This also includes the service, cremation (which is where most of the cost lies) and burial. Burial plots cost a lot, usually they are family graves so they are looking at several million (consider it as a kind of real estate) even just for the stone grave marker. They basically pay a rental fee to the temple in perpetuity. Poor people are now being stored in columbariums due to lack of space. These are basically glorified storage lockers for funeral urns, which one can buy and reserve for after his or her passing.
