Something that I read this morning ... made me shed a tear !!

CHENNAI: A 32-year-old woman was crushed under the wheels of an engineering college bus near Mandaveli, but not before she saved her daughter.. The woman threw the four-year-old girl to safety moments before she was run over. Jane, the child, escaped with bruises.

The accident took place on Friday evening on Mandaveli-Patinapakkam Main Road when M Usha, 32, was riding pillion on her brother-in-law Mahavir's scooter. The two-wheeler hit a protruding concrete manhole cover and Mahavir lost balance and all of them fell. Usha held on to Jane, who was sitting on her lap, as she fell. When Usha saw the bus hurtling towards them, she threw Jane to side of the road, eyewitnesses told police.

The driver of the bus, which was close behind the scooter, applied brakes but could not stop the vehicle in time. The bus ran over Usha and she died on the spot.

"It was shocking and heartrending," a policeman quoted an eyewitness as saying.

"As if aware of the imminent danger, she threw the child who fell a few yards from the bus wheels. The child had minor bruises on her hands and legs. She kept crying, probably without realising that her mother was dead," the witness said.

The bus, belonging to a leading engineering college on the outside of the city.

Police arrested the 68-year-old driver, Munusamy .

A passerby informed Adyar traffic investigation police about the accident. A police team that went to the spot sent Usha's body to Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.

Police said Usha, a resident of Ayodhya Flats on South Canal Bank Road in Adyar, is survived by her husband Manoj Kumar, 37, who has a pawn shop near their house, and daughter. Usha had gone to her relative's house in Mandaiveli, and Mahavir had gone to pick her up. They were returning home when the accident occurred.

Traffic was disrupted for around 15 minutes because of the accident. Adyar traffic investigation police registered a case under Section 304 (a) (death caused due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against bus driver R Munusamy, of Kallukuttai near Kannagi Nagar. Munusamy was remanded in Puzhal prison on Saturday after police produced him before a magistrate's court in the city.

RIP Usha! So sad it happened so cruelly. A mother's sacrifice is truly great...she saved her daughter's life. Wish she rolled over alongwith her baby :(
