Mark Twain had great respect for one of his friends and was praising him among other friends. A common friend told him “ you are talking about him with so much respect whereas he is talking ill of you.” Mark didn't bother about it. He paused for a little, then laughed and told,” Both of us have misunderstood each other , all these days, perhaps .” (Read somewhere)
LOL. Good one! Hadn't come across this earlier. I will use it sometime for sure with due credit to Twain.
Thank you for your feedback. I read the item ' habit ' in "Mark Twain's quotes ' in the net . ' Misunderstanding' and two more jokes: ' luck' and ' prestige' , I read somewhere in 1990s. Since I was not sure , in ' luck ' , I wrote " a great writer " without mentioning any name . For ' misunderstanding ' and 'prestige' I wish my memory be correct in mentioning ' Mark Twain'. Thanks.
