Those who cannot afford to own something, ought to rent, and be content. :tonguewink:

    Dear @Deborah and @shravs3,

Thanks for the valuable inputs. I truly believe that marriage is a gamble. Some of the best matched marriages/marriages after years of courtship and even live-ins have failed. On the other hand some oddly matched couple and socially unsuccessful/unimportant people have had the best of marriages. Do we call it fate, interpersonal failure or what? How many marriages survive when the setbacks and reasons beyond human control strike?

Even after making sincere efforts to make a marriage work, if it fails, I guess without any guilt or shame one should be able to walk out with dignity. The society should ideally help such people in need without resorting to any criticism or judgement.

It would be good if right from the school age, our children are taught at schools the essential skills like treating all with respect, respecting individual boundaries, being empathetic, managing egos, equality of sexes etc.

You said it right, Amulet. Knowledge/awareness is power. Repeated seeing, reading and listening perhaps helps to reduce expectations and helps to be pragmatic in approach. More than anything, it demystifies the concept of marriage; perhaps the future generations may do away with the concept of marriage and bring in a better or practical alternative.

It gives a purpose, isn't it. To work hard to own something.

In that way, kids are seen as a blessing than as a 'if not for the kids, i would leave him'.

Marriage is a gamble but so is every choice we make in life. I feel many times, we indian women, focus so much on marriage that it's difficult to view ourselves as individuals. I've recently shifted to the UK n I find the attitude towards marriage so different, not sure if it's good though. Divorce is common but woman have so much more confidence that there is life beyond marriage and do develop themselves to face these situations as well. Even if things don't work out they move on and give themselves another chance.. In Indian society, it's still quite unacceptable and so is a great fear for women especially..
