    Hi,

My Father was Diabetic and he underwent treatment in M.V. Diabetes Centre in Chennai. Based on his personal experiences and information provided from M V Diabetes centres, I would like to add the below on creating Diabetes awareness

Firstly, Diabetes is not disease – it is a condition. The condition is fully reversible in the initial stages and controllable at the advanced stages.

For Type 2 Diabetes (non-insulin dependant) , there are 3 important factors – Food, Exercise and AWARENESS about Diabetes

    Food

It is very necessary to take little quantities of food at regular intervals.. For eg, Morning 6.30 or 7.00 – a tea or coffee ; 8.00 or 8.30 two Idlies or Dosas; 11.00 or 11.30 – a glass of Buttermilk or veg. soup; 1.00 – a light lunch which is fibre rich; 4.00 – tea with a healthy snack or Oats Porridge ; 7.00 or 7.30 Dinner

    Erercise
Exercise – mild aerobic exercises, walking, jogging, cycling are good. Yoga and Meditation will also help.

    Awareness

Getting EDUCATED about Diabetes is the best solution to handle this condition.

The basic idea to restrict to a light meal is to keep the blood sugar under control so that it does not shoot up tooo much due to the amount of food intake.
At the same time, the frequent time interval is not to let the blood sugar drop down the normal. If the blood sugar drops down too much, then people may feel dizzy and some would also faint. The best thing to avoid lower of blood sugar is to always have a little toffee handy in our pockets / purse so that once you get a uncomfortable feeling, swallow that little Toffee.

Never have double dosage of Pills when you over eat or take sweets - this will not improve but rather worsen the situation by the blood sugar getting dropped alarmingly.

It does not matter if you eat rice or chappati. Eat lesser quantity. Chappatis are going to shed out the same amount of carbohydrate like the rice.. It is MYTH that diabetic patients should eat only Wheat items.. It is important to include fibre in the food.. Reduce the intake of carbodhydrates and increase the intake of green vegetables..

    Thanks & Regards,

    Divya
