The paruppu keerai or the purslane greens or pigweed..
    images (9).jpg

They resemble methi in shape though they are a little thicker, succulent in nature. the leaves contain water..so they are mucilaginous like pasalai keerai but not to the extent of pasalai..

they contain omega 3 fatty acids in plenty. so a wonderful green substitute for fish oil..highest vitamin a. do give kids. camouflage it in sambhar until the kids get the hang of the taste.like i do...

    Wow!
I didn't know these are edible. They grow as weeds in my garden and I am always pulling out great bunches once the weather warms up!

@malstrom there are a couple of varieties of the same paruppu keerai. if the one that crops up in your home has yellow flowers than it is paruppu keerai. do cross check with a vendor to be safer.but if it paruppu you are in for a wonderful meal. you can stir fry if you don't mind the new taste..

    a rich source of multivitamins...

It's edible alright. Its called Kulfa in hindi. As @shanvy pointed out, its very nutritious and grows by itself. My farmer's market charges 4$ for a small bunch and the farmers do say it grows by itself, its not cultivated. I am guessing, like wild fish, the wild greens are more nutritious :)

@shanvy, again I am surprised that you get this in Chennai. I have never seen this as long as I lived in TN :( One of the few vegetarian sources of omega....
