    Hi Mythili,
Don't worry about it. They are used to keep the moist in the plant.
I don't get why there was bad smell. Change the water.
    Regards.

    Hope these tips help:)

To start, you'll need a plant. Look for it labled Lucky Bamboo, Ribbon Plant, or occasionally by it's true name, Dracaena sanderiana. Any size plant will do to start, but make sure it smells fresh, as a bad odor indicates poor health.
Next, find a pot that is about 2 inches bigger around than the plant. You can use a sealed pot and grow it in pure water, or you can plant it in soil in a pot with a drain hole.
If you are growing it in standing water, you will need some pebbles to hold it upright. If in soil, try mixing 1/3rd each of sand, peat moss, and regular soil to insure excellent drainage.
If you are growing it in standing water, it is best to keep the water level above the top of the supporting pebbles. But you will need to change the water at least once per week to prevent the plant from rotting. It is a good idea to rinse the vase, pebbles, and plant each time you do this.
If you are growing the plant in soil, let the soil get damp (as opposed to wet or dry) between watering. Then water the plant heavily so that the soil os fully saturated.
Add a very light fertilizer periodically. Remember that most plants do not sit in soggy soil or standing water. So they need a higher dose of fertilizer to get enough in their system. However, Dracenia will sit in the fertilized water for days at a time. Too much fertilizer is worse than none at all, so use it sparingly.

Use distilled water to prevent algae from growing in your vase.

I read this about lucky bamboo.thought to share it.

Different numbers of stalks are thought to symbolize slightly different kinds of luck, so you can use this information to help with your selection if you want (or just pick an arragement that you like):
    2 stalks = love
    3 or 6 stalks = happiness
    5 or 7 stalks = health
    8 stalks = wealth
9 stalks = general good fortune
    21 stalks = blessings

Thats what I've heard. That the plant will grow if you trim the leaves.
