An artsy friend invited me to attend the Kochi Biennale last month, which I discovered later, is India's largest and most exciting contemporary art festival. It was created along the lines of the Venice Biennale, arguably the most prestigious art festival in the world. I am embarrassed to say I had never heard of this incredible event until recently. I am not much of an art connoisseur but it was easily one of the most memorable experiences I've had.

Anyway, the bit that made me think of this thread was discovering that the complete name of the Kochi Biennale is in fact the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Imagine my excitement when I read the displays for the first time. : ) It was gratifying to run into the name in the real world and to see that it is not some forgotten bit of history, but very much a part of present day conversation. I'm sure many of you already know of this but it was a happy discovery for me. : )

    Their mission states -

"The Kochi-Muziris Biennale seeks to invoke the latent cosmopolitan spirit of the modern metropolis of Kochi and its mythical past, Muziris, to create a platform that will introduce contemporary, global visual art theory and practice to India."

Here's a comprehensive introduction to the festival (with English subtitles).
