    Hi all,

I am a puneite without many contacts here except for my in-laws. I got married to this place but am stranded without any girl friends. SO I go shopping with my husband, I go dine with him and I walk around iwth him. Though he co operates a great I miss having some people of my own sex to go out with me for shopping.

    1. I hate Pune for its traffic. But staying in Yerwada I don't have any good matching centres near my house. And I hate going to Laxmi road for as small as a blouse piece. Please tell me if you know any quality matching centres near Yerwada. Last time I bought a cotton blouse piece from Khadki and it bled to death.:spin

    2. Next is the problem of stitching blouses. I can't find a decent economical tailor in our area for stitching blouses. One I have heard of in FC is road is expensive 250 rs per blouse.:bonkWhereas Salwar tailors are in plenty at 120 rs per piece!

    3. Where I can find nice Kurtas except from malls and Fab India? If there is any place...

    4. Which is the best shop for buying undergarments in this area? I want normal stuff and not imported or costly ones?:hide:

Please help me. I don't know much in Pune.

Hi dear. welcome to Pune and I hope you feel at home soon, hopefully some of us at IL will make you less of loner! We are all there for you.

I am not very much familiar around Yerwada side, so I am totally helpless when it would come to have decent places to buy clothes in this area.

But, I can definitely help you to find a nice place for Kurtis. Though you will end up coming to city - because you really do get some nice stuff in Laxmi Road. There is a shop - Hastakala (not the saree shop) but take a left turn at Kunte chowk, they have nice cotton kurtis at resonable rates. Also, check out Hy Fashion at Laxmi ROad, they have a nice collection. Also, just beside Hy Fasion is another shop - with nice kurties (at the basement) I will try getting this name also for you. If Kadki Bazaar is ok for you - because there is frequent commute from Yerwada to here, there is a big store - Rajgharana - has some nice kurtie collection.

As for the blouse, my tailor at Tulsi Baag has done some for me, and they turned out pretty good. Though I have to warn you these weren't the fancy kind. Sorry dear but dont remember the price, but I dont think it would be as costly as 250/- but ofcourse I will try checking that out too. If you are interested, its called Sony Fashion

For undergarments, there is huge store inside Tulsi baag, its exclusively for undergarments. It a nice place to get cheap to costly undies. Shoot, I dont remember the name, but if you are interested to come this far, I will draw some maps for you to get through.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply. Yeah, I really miss having company in Pune.:drowning

I think I have been to Hy Fashion longgg back to find ready made clothes but they did not have durability even at 450rs. I will definitely check out the other shops you have mentioned when I venture out of my locality.:thumbsup Khadki is close by and will keep an eye out for Kurtis.

Do you really mean to say that I will have to go to Tulsi bagh for undies? :crazy I think I have seen that shop you refer to. But I can't travel up there for small stuff. You need a gang to shop in such places.

Basically, I am from Cochin, from the heart of cochin and I had the habit of getting everything just by reaching out. Though it is a developed city very much like Pune its small and fun. I have the famous saree shops 5 mnts away from my house and a number of tailors (ordinary and designers) at the turn of my head. So are there parlours and stuff. And I could either hire a Rik or get a bus. So going to places like Yerwarda or Khadki market is a torture for me.

Also, I am not sure about the quality of stuff sold in the shops here. people have the habit of mentally hiking the prices looking at the customers. And people know where to bargain and where not to. Whereas I fail to bargain and also to gauge the quality of the products. In Kochi, the price is the same for the maid and the madam alike. Kochi is definitely my place for silk sarees as Pune seems to be very expensive.

I have visited the row of shops in Laxmi Rd for my cousin's wedding. There was no good saree for below 2k. I have also purchased from Peshwai and Dulhan.

hi raisin, welcome to IL. I am from kochi too so i can understand how close everything is if you are staying somewhere between ravipuram to vimlalayam.

I have not used tailoring services here in pune so am not aware if these tailors are good or not....but there a couple of tailors in fortaleza opp adlabs in kalyani nagar on the 1st floor. There are 2 boutiques too opp fortaleza in sunshine court or the bldg next to it, they too take stitching work.

unfortunately i am out of pune from tmr for next couple of weeks or would have loved to help you out here.

just last week i was taking around this lady who has shifted from australia to do her shopping and also one spanish with whom i share my maid...would have taken you also along with them.

If you don't succeed till i return then maybe we'll pick up from there. I stay close to nagar road so will not be a problem.

Hi raisin! I can totally understand ur concern for the orices hiked! I haven't found a decent and resonable place to get sarees in Pune. They really are exhaustive prices at the bigger stiores like Dulhan, etal!

But, do check out the kurtis. Usually, when I dont like kurtis from outside, I end up stichiing them too! I like them better.

I have been cochin n number of times, my uncle stays there, so I know there are lots of shops and places to buy clothes!! Though ok, I haven't stiched any from there.

Best of luck with ur search :thumbsup

P.S : I wanted to add my own query. Do you seriously think that I might get better sarees in Cochin? You know, my cousin is getting married in Aug. so was planning on wearing a saree, do you think I will get some nice stuff in Cochin? I would rather buy something from there when I go. But the biggest problem is the blouse yaar!!! :bonkWish I could get one done from there.

    Hey roopadadia,

Thanks a lot for your post. Nice to learn that a fellow member is also around who belong to Kochi.

I will surely have a go at the places you suggested.

    Hey all,

I have a friend's husband coming from USA. He has asked me to help him out on shopping salwars suits for his wife. What are the shops that I can suggest him? I have hardly bought stuff from Pune other than Rangoli near Laxmi Rd. Do you get anything reasonable in M G Road? How about Pune cotton? I bet he wouldn't want anything expensive.

There are a few shops in kalyani nagar and koregaon park as well.

MG road too has a few shops in wonderland i suppose and you can also try JM road FC road.

If you are planning to go shopping after 20th then let me know, i'll try to find out more shops where you can get reasonably priced good and latest choice of clothes.

    Shopping Update

Hey all, Thanks a lot for informing me about the shops in Pune which I would always love to go and may be every month.:)

I need to check M G Road shops and pick a few for routine visits may be to buy clothes as presents as they come near by. I had gone to Laxmi RD with my friends and checked out Hy Fashion, Hastakala and Jai Hind.

My main problem is bargaining. Since in Kochi there is no concept of bargaining I don't know how to do it and esp with my hsuband behind me staring at us. :) So in HY fashion we bought for 1975 k and he gave me a 100 rs discount only on my paper silk dress material (775)and said that they don't discount for pune cotton (595)and bandini (650). Were we fooled?

In hastakala, do they give discounts? Anyway we did not give them 70 rs and said that was enough. I checked out the kurtis there and they did not have a good collection in my large size medium length! I shall check out later on with my mom. I did not like their suit collection whatsoever. But the kutris were definitely reasonable and buyable in plenty!

I did not like Jai Hind and did not buy anything for myself.

Thanks for all the help, ladies. And pls keep posting any new store you discover in Pune.

    Gayathri,

I second you on that saree thing. Sarees are way expensive and complicated in Pune. I guess people have a lot of money to spend on bridal wear in Pune that the shop keepers hike the prices like hell. I had visited the row of shops in Laxmi rd buying sarees with my cousin on her wedding. I did not like any of them compared to the price.:hide: Finally, I bought a couple (2-3k) from Peshwai and thougt that theirs was a lil diff.

Yes, Kochi is better when it comes to sarees, exotic collection and price ranges. It is never cheap though.

I have got a lot of sarees mostly cottons and silks/kanchipuram. I have bought them from Kalyan silks, Jayalakshmi and one or two synthetic ones from Sheematti. There is also a shop in broadway (I think cloth bazar road) called Shanakaranaraya Iyer store which keeps a selected few but not verry expensive but different.

You can take a look at album silk in Jayalakshmi (2k and above), then pure silk (style than fancy at 1500 ish), samudrika silk and so on. Kalyans is also fine. I don't like sheematti much. Damn, I miss them so much as shopping i sonly 10 mnts away form my house.

    BTW, Never buy from Parthas!

Why I like shoppin in kochi is that the price is kochi remains the same for the sweeper and the maharaja alike. In pune, I have had problem with quality vs money. :drowning Most of my cotton suits are from kochi which have lasted well over 5 years. Pune ones have bled themselves to death in a year or two.:crazy

Now blouse stitching, I like it better in kochi. The bottom edge of my blouses always fold back while sitting as they don't make it padded. I hate they way they make the cups too. Blouse should look like a blouse and not like a gown. You should try stitching a sample blouse and see how that works. salwar stitching is great in Pune in style and cost.

Let me know if you anymore Kochi queries!

    Thanks raisin!
Thats really a complete info of shopping for me in Cochin. I will definitely want to be around these circuits atleast once while I am there. And well yes. now that you said it, I think they stitch blouses better there - thats why pattu-pavada blouses stitched there were always better fitted than those I had stiched elesewhere!

@ Pune : It jas just become a place to earn loads of money in clothes (isn't it an eternal requirement of public :bonk, esp. when Pune is considered to becoming a full-fledge IT hub!)

I am very bad at bargaining myself, so I end up like you - saving 70 - 100 bucks with respect to thousands spent!:hide: But really speaking, I think these shops do not entertain bargaining, bacause they know - bargain or not - people will keep buying, they really wont even mind if you left out without buying, because they know others are around, Such is the mentality!

About the prices you mentioned for the clothes, I wouldn't say that they are reasonable rates (when compared to the quality) , but these are the kind of ONLY rates that you will find in other stores, rather people might ask more that these! So these could have been worse.
