My experiences for my elbow and my mom's surgery were not that great at MIOT...they do have a reputation for writing a lot of referals for unneccessary tests and treatment-do get lots of reviews...

Dr. Subramanian in Mandaveli, Chennai is a very famous ortho. I know a lady who has had knee replacement surgery performed by this Specialist and now travels worldwide at the age of 60+. And, she has a normal regular walking style too !

Hello Ladies - After doing some research and looking up this thread, having benefited from the feedback and comments, I am here to post my experience with Knee Replacement Surgery. I benefited from these posts and I am sure somebody will benefit from my comments too. My Mother In Law (63 years) underwent the knee replacement surgery for both of her knees during the last week of January 2014.

I should say that this surgery was somewhat past due for her. Her knee pains had progressively increased in intensity for last 12 years. She was through intense pain for more than 3 years and prior to that she had explored various options, getting injections, herbal treatment, massage vibration therapy etc.,. She finally was at a point where TKR (Total Knee Replacement) was the only option. After some checking around, we decided to get this done with Dr. RM Alagappan, who visits Hande Hospital, Chennai.

Our experience with the hospital and the doctor was extremely positive. Even the post surgery followup with the physiotherapist was excellent. I would say the cost of the surgery was reasonable and comparable, from whatever limited research and enquiries I did.

The Hospital itself is a multi specialty hospital. The biggest upside that I saw was that this is not a very big hospital that it begins to feel heartless., nor is it a small hospital that it lacks specialists and equipment. It is right in between, well staffed and equipped. The sisters (nurses) on duty, during night and day were very caring, understanding and accommodating. My MIL was admitted for 7 days and by then we pretty much knew most doctors and nurses by names.

Dr. Alagappan himself, seems highly qualified and seems to have done a ton of these surgeries. I would refrain from commenting more than necessary here, as I am not qualified. There were no negative experience with the surgeon, was always available for any clarifications. Seemed highly capable and gave his opinions and recommendations without appearing to force himself.

The surgery itself, for those who might want to know, is a quick operation. She was in the Operation Theater for about three hours during which both her knees were replaced. Was it painful..? Yes...as long as the epidural (anesthetic) was on, the pain was bearable. The epidural was there for almost 48 hours after the operation., during which period she had to be totally on the bed. After the epidural was removed, she migrated to pain killer injections, and then after another 2 days to pain killer tablets. There was pain, that goes without saying.

I am posting this about second week of March 2014, about 45 days after the operation. The pain is totally gone for the last 20-25 days. Infact depending on the strength, stamina of the individual the pain can totally gone anywhere between 5 - 15 days, after surgery. She has been walking very normally (without the hobble), for more than 20 days now. Day by day she is gaining confidence and is definitely in a much much better shape.

Hope someone will gain from this elaborate commentary.

    Thanks
    Sunita

    Hi Sunita,

I am looking for details for knee replacement surgery for my Mom in Chennai. Your post is very helpful. I wanted to follow-up and see how your Mother-In-Law is doing after surgery. I think it is more than 3 years now. Is the surgery helping to keep the pain away long term?

Also any details on post surgery physical therapy will be very helpful.

    Thanks,
    Anu

Arthritis is the main common reason that leads to knee replacement.Other factors like genetics, repetitive injuries, obesity also contribute to this disease. Before the knee replacement surgery, the patient needs to know the risks and benefits of the surgery.Total knee replacement and partial replacement are there. In total knee replacement surgery, surgeon repairs the knee joint and it includes removal of some bone.In partial knee replacement, surgeon will replace only part of knee that is damaged or arthritic. The doctor will suggest physical therapy for further rehabilitation after surgery.A number of home exercises will be given to strengthen the thigh and muscles. For more Total Knee Arthroplasty Surgery Asia.
