An out of the world Man of Music! Is there any heart that does not melt when hearing the songs of Umrao Jaan? He is the guy who comes 'Kabi kabi kyal mein'. Asha Bhosle stole more hearts singing the songs in Umrao Jaan than any other movie. Adding lustre to the songs was the lovely Rekha Don't you keep thinking about this song from time to time? Lata is inimitable in this song. From the movie Bazaar. That's beautiful Supriya Pathak for you From Dard And a black and white movie for you! Mohabbat Isko Kahete Hain !
I have always loved Khayyam's music that seems to auto-play in loops and seem to set a magical mood. I loved all the songs you have showcased. Music from the film Noorie was also very good.
Dear Cheeniya Sir, Khayyam was the only composer who maintained exceptionally high standards of classical music, throughout his film career, which itself was a tremendous challenge amidst the commercialism that thrived in the industry. That’s why we have only 41 songs in his 3 decades of his career. He is 90 now and I am sorry to find such a great artist undergoing the travails of old age. God bless him and artists of his caliber! A song from Lala rookh - Talat and Asha Agatha83
@Agatha83 Thank you for your excellent input about Khayyam. This song from Phir Subha Hogi still haunts me: I do not understand your statement about 41 songs. He has directed music for 41 films only in his entire career. I rate his music for Umrao Jaan as his best.
Dear Cheeniya Sir, You are absolutely right in the number of films for which he has scored music-41. Chennai heat is playing mischief with my brain. Happy Tamil New year to you and your family. Agatha83
I wonder how it must feel to be the music director of something so divine. Each song from Umrao Jaan is a masterpiece. My favorite from this movie keeps changing. Music in this song matches the sheer sadness and bottomless despair of the questions. Na bas khushii pe hai jahaa.N, na gham pe ikhtiyaar hai Where [I have] no control on joy and no right/privilege/choice in sorrow Kabhi Kabhie is another one where one rarely fast-forwarded the audio-cassette. I like this less known song that plays at the end in the movie.
Felt soo nice to read the name of the movie Lala rookh. Another song from it - hai kali kali ke labh per - is something I am grateful youtube made easier to listen to. The movie starred Talat Mahmood. One of his lifelong regrets what that he didn't make it as an actor.
When I play this song, I cannot continue with other work. It asks that one pauses and listens and lets the melody soothe the ear.
