<TABLE width="100%">How to Maintain Pearl Accessories

    1) Avoid keeping pearls together with hard gems and precious metals.
The surface of a pearl is not as hard as those of other types of jewelry. If pearls come into contact with these objects, they can scratch very easily.
    2) Remove pearl accessories before working around water.
Water is not good for pearls, to say nothing of soaps, bleach, and other substances that may happen to be present. On a related note, it is wise to carefully wipe your pearls with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Even the most fastidious wearer cannot prevent a bit of natural perspiration, and taking care to keep the pearls dry will preserve their beauty.
    3) Be especially careful around vinegar and fruit juices.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that vinegar and acidic fruit juices are the natural enemies of pearls. If these liquids should come into contact with the pearls, clean the pearls immediately with a soft, dry cloth to avoid discoloration.
    4) Avoid using volatile cosmetics while wearing pearl accessories.
As with vinegar and fruit juice, pearls are very weak against cosmetics. In case of direct contact, clean the pearls at once--in this case with a moist cloth--and wipe dry as usual.
    5) Store pearls in a dark place.
Pearls do not do well under bright light, be it direct sunlight or fluorescent light. They will discolor , so please take care to keep them in a case or drawer, safely out of the light.
The above five points cover the vital aspects of pearl care. One last thing to remember: it would be well to change the strings of pearl necklaces once a year.

    Silver Jewellery maintenance tips

    What is Tarnish?

Tarnish is a chemical compound formed due to the oxidation of silver. Usually silver reacts with hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide or chloride salts in air causing a discolouration on its surface. And this discolouration is tarnish.

    Tarnish in its beginning stage

If you can see a yellowish brown tinge on your silver there is nothing to worry. Your silver has just started to tarnish. All you need to do is rub your jewellery piece thoroughly with a silver polishing cloth.

    Tarnish at its worst stage

If the silver has a dark purple shade it means tarnish is at its worst.
    Preventing tarnish

Clean silver jewellery regularly with any phosphate free detergent.
Do not wear silver jewellery while entering swimming pool or while showering.
Wear your jewellery after your make up; this will reduce the contact with sun tan lotions, hair sprays, body lotions and other chemicals.
Remove your silver jewellery before doing any physical activities (exercise or other house hold chores).
Store your silver jewellery in an atmosphere which can retard tarnish.

    Storing silver jewellery

Silver should be stored in a tarnish repelling atmosphere i.e. wrap silver in acid-free tissues and store it in tarnish resistant cloth or polyethylene bags.
Another trick to prevent tarnish while storing is to drop a chalk piece in the jewellery box.

To prevent scratches make sure you store the jewellery pieces separately or wrap it in silver polish cloth individually.

It is also important that you should never keep silver near stainless steel containers. Also don’t handle silver by wearing rubber gloves; it will increase oxidization because it emits sulphur.

Please do not spray on any kind if alcohol or chemical based material on the jewellery. Avoid Hot water on the jewellery. Wipe the jewellery when keeping it inside by a soft cloth. Silver, Copper & Gold content may vary in each jewellery.

    Regards,Janani

very useful tips to keep diamond, silver and imitation jewellries. i want to give some tips to maintain gold jewellery.

To maintain the glittering in the gold jewels, wash it with soap water. then wipe it with cotton cloth.

Daily use bangle, ear ring look dull. wash it with shampoo or punthi kottai (i dont know its English name). It will glitter.

We seldom wear stone bangle, big aaram.Dont keep everythiing in one box. To avoid crack in that keep separately in the jewel box given for that.

If you dont have jewellery box to keep the gold jewels, wrap it in banian cotton cloth and keep it in bureau locker. it wont look dull.
