    We all know there is a part as brain and one as heart.Though people become brain dead the heart will keep functioning. But heart can neither think nor give order to other parts of the body.

    when a person acts cruelly people say s/he is heartless. Mind is supposed to be the English word for manam. But according to physiology there is no part as mind.

    Broadly speaking brain is the controlling power of the central nervous system. There is no physical part exists in the body as mind. Sometimes we use the brain and mind interchangeably knowing there is an organ as brain but none as mind. The brain is the physical place where the mind which is abstract resides.

    The mind is the manifestations of thought, perception, emotion,determination,memory and imagination that takes place within the brain. Mind is often used to refer especially to the thought process of reason. The mind is the awareness of consciousness we know, the ability to control what we do, and know what we are doing and why. It is the ability to understand.

    In short we can say that the brain is a part of our body and mind is the expression of collected experiences of body from other sources. The brain through intellect generate thoughts and the mind does the analysis and implement them.

    Dear Smt. Srinivasan:

    Brain functions as a central command and a reviewer, researcher and instructor to the body. Mind has multiple functions like Manas (Emotions), Buddhi (Intellect), Chitha (Memory) And Ahankara (Ego). Manas is considerably influenced by the five senses, Buddhi is the discriminating power, Chitha is the repository of the past and Ahankara emanates from the feeling of dualism. While brain has a location in the had the Mind is a composition of many functions in the body and spreads across the body. The Mind resides in every cell in our body and the cell is perfectly capable of changing its function based on changed thoughts, emotions and feelings. Dr. Bruce H. Lipton in his book, "Biology of Belief" said that every cell has mind of its own and can learn from the behavior of other cells and adjust itself to changed thoughts, emotions and feelings. He says human life improves based on how we influence the city of cells.

    Our body, our existence, our surroundings including nature all have manam. It includes consciousness, memory, cognition and many more aspects that our neuroscience and other scientists are just beginning to explore. It includes physical aspects of prana or life source and manam existance.
    Very interesting aspect on it-

    According to Ramana, apart from thoughts there is no such thing as mind.Apart from thoughts there is no independent entity called the world.Just as the spider emits the thread (of the web)out ofitself and again withdraws it into itself,the mind projects the world out of itself and again resolves it into itself.When the mind comes out of the Self,the world appears .Therefore when the world appears to be( to be REal) the Self does not appear.When the Self shines,the world is not there.When persistent enquiry into the mind is made,the mind will end there leaving the Self as residue.
    Scientists are trying to prove this.

    @Viswamitra
    Dear Viswa,
    Thank you for your prompt response. After posting the snippet I googled and found a lot of information on this subject. As you have said Manaus is considerably influenced by the five senses. Our perceptions keep changing after new experiences.

    Dear Jaya,
    Ramona Maharishi the enlightened, has an intriguing and fascinating theory regarding mind. I do believe that our thoughts which originate from the discriminating power of intellect pays a major role in recognising the self and the maya. But a very tough task which needs lot of effort.
