Smt Iyer Viji's snippet on leading a life without expectation persuaded me to analyse the subject in a different angle.
True," Pothum enra maname Pon seyyum Marunthu"( To say enough is golden"
Lust is the creator of all evils and so on.

Yet we cannot deny the fact that all the scientific developments and comforts of life would never have been possible if people were satisfied with walking or travelling by bullock carts, and women were happy spending long hrs with grinding stones and firewood ovens.I may not be posting this message thro internet, if all were content with written communications being sent thro post.

If you have in your heart the feeling of contentment, you will definitely enjoy whatever you had. Even though how trivial it may be nor invaluable. you’ll get the feeling of accomplishment and complete sheer enjoyment. This approach will generate a positive energy .
But whenever a person stops dreaming and aiming for his goal, that person never grows and eventually he gets stuck in one point. For that person is contented of living a very low despicable life and doesn’t want a welcome change. That is an unprincipled contentment, a paralyzed contentment and not a healthy contentment.
He lacks the spirit to strive, perspire and persevere.

There is a very old adage which says “Dictionary is the only place where SUCCESS comes before WORK.”

All human beings do have, not only material needs, but have Physiological, Safety, Social, Ego, Self-actualization and Spiritual needs.

Physiological needs are such as basic necessities such as Food, Air, Shelter and an activity. This is just the biological balance and stable equilibrium.

Safety and security is a feeling of being secured to oneself with no threats, safety towards present and future may fall under this category.

Social needs are all about the social behaviour at work place which comprises intimacy between employees, their comfort level of interaction, conduct of peers etc.

Ego Needs – All of us are in need of respect & recognition. Ego is the want of respect for self and also the identification for one-self.Ego's participation in character building cannot be underestimated.

Self Actualization – is working for a purpose,Personal Growth , and also realizing one’s potentiality. This is an active part where one realizes one’s functionality and delivers the job to a complete satisfaction. This also paves a way to personality development. It drives one forward and onwards.

Spiritual needs – Need for purity, need for feeling rightness, Sensation of closeness to destiny, justifying a role for edifying ones goals, It’s a part of human mind inclined towards the spirituality & philosophy.

Any blockage in satisfaction of any of the needs stated above will defenitely be a blockage to the wholesome personality development .
You cannot just satisfy yourself by saying that you are content with what you possess and if you are destined, and be calm leading a life of non expectations , some strange benefits will accrue to you from heaven.Once in a blue moon, it may happen as a matter of coincidence, but never permanently.

But the true fact is that, a job seems to be uninteresting when you stop yourself to be innovative, when there is a cease in the process of thinking in a different direction, pioneering new ideas, stopping one-self to look at the positive outcomes and growth prospects in distinctive & diversified manner because you have compromised yourself for a low level of attainment as if it is a divine quality.

Most of us carry closed loops in our mind. We shut all the doors of a room and look at only one direction and expect sunrays to rush in, star’s to twinkle in day-light.
We expect everything to go according to our intentions, our desires and ambitions.

We never even think that we may be wrong,we tend to do mistakes and our calculations may fail. Our so called 'contentment' of which we are elated, block the ways to re-think otherwise and seal it off only with our assumption that we are perfect.

Open up, grow and think for an improvement, believe that you can do something innovative, imagine to think differently and what actually can make you feel pleased about the place and bring a smile on your face.

Instead of being satisfied with what you know, try to discover and know something new everyday.
No garden is built sitting under a shade and claiming Oh! How beautiful!

The secret of joy in work is contained in one word - excellence. For excellence you need to think big, act big and grow big. Having expectation is not a crime or sin , but a real tool for development.

" Karmanyeva Adhikarasthe, maa phaleshu kadhaachana "says Gita,
Gita's Karma definitely includes fixing higher aims, update the skill sets, proving yourself adaptable to growing changes etc etc and not accepting the minimum and downgrading your potentials.
People may object to this logic saying that your desire grows endless.
Yes it is true. What is wrong if you desire more?
It is the desire that makes you learn;it is the desire that makes your knowledge shine;it is the desire that makes you uncompromising on perfection;it is the desire that makes you unreconciling towards inferior attainments.
The world would not have achieved one thousandth of what is today, had everybody been content with the lowest attainment possible.

    Being happy with the smallest achievement is one thing;
Being happy with the big achievement with heart and mind brimming with enthusiasm ready to take up more ventures is entirely different in content and magnitude
Elders used to say" Aim at the sky, you can at least reach the top of the tree"

That is an interesting analysis of contentment. True, while contentment is a virtue, it certainly does not mean we throw up our hands, sit on our back sides and smile beatifically at the world as we watch it pass by. The idea is that we do our best, no matter what we choose to do without getting swayed by success or failure. Taking both in our stride with equanimity and being grateful for whatever is ours is what being content is all about.

    Dear Mrs Jayasala,

As far as rightful actions are concerned, we should be able to achieve highest level of skills and there is no need for contentment. However, when we get results of our actions, we should hold such results in trust gratefully dedicating them to the higher consciousness with no pride and leading a simplest level of life with contentment.

Conntentment should be in accept ion the results of the actions and not in actions.

    Dear Jayasala,
Imagination leads to imagination and dreams lead to achievement. But not all our efforts succeed.Instead of being crestfallen attempt something you are capable of.The problem arise only when we compare with others and make life miserable for ourselves. Then the saying "iruppadhai vaithu inbutru illamal, illadhadhai patri enguvathu madamai andro"
