Hi, my son is doing the second semester in Mass Communication at Amrita Scool of Communication, Coimbatore. I heard from one of his friend's parents that many of his classmates (girls) had done internship during the sem holidays at various places. I had been thinking that internship is done towards the end of a course. Can anyone tell me more about it? And I would like to know about possible internship oppurtunity at any place in Chennai. My son is interested in doing PhD in his subject and he intends to take up teaching as a career. Thank you.
Hi, there are usually more than one internship in a mass comm course: for Public relations, advertisement, (if new media is a part of the course then new media), journalism. Some schools let the student decide his specialisation in journalism - financial, developmental, editing, etc and lets them intern in the specified roles. As internship is generally requested by the college, they will have a protocol. All news papers take interns, mostly they come in December and course end, but most offices will have a lot of interns at that point and that could be counter productive if your son wants to learn - I have been an intern with too many interning at a time and i have been the person they report to also. Usually they are a month long, but can be longer if the trainee so desires. Hope that answers all your questions.
Dear Tikka, thank you for your valuable answer. I also feel that he should decide the field first. And also, only after he learns things theoritically he can do well in practical. But I have been thinking of letting him work somewhere to get some insight into what is happening. In the meantime, is it necessary that he should do the internship now or should he wait for some time more? Are u also a journalist, by any chance?
