Indians In New Zealand introduce yourself here!

Hello Ladies,

My name is Geeta and I am from Mumbai. My husband will be travelling to Wellington NZ in June. He has got an offer from a NZ company. Myself and my daughter will be joining after a couple of months.

Can you please let me know about the Indian community in Wellington ? Are there any Indian grocery shops nearby ?

There are many Indian stores in Wellington. There is one in Wellington CBD itself. And one in Newton and many in the other suburbs.

Many thanks for the reply. Also, I am glad to know that you too have a baby of abt 1.5 yrs. My daughter too is 18 months and so I was a bit concerned about the schooling there in Wellington. How are the schools/preschools there? Is there any racial discrimination for Indians in schools?

Could you also please guide me on, where to look out for renting an apartment in Wellington? Any region/area which has more Indian community or safe for Indians ?


Also, it would be gr8 if you could share your experiences in NZ.

Hi Sudha, farmers market are open every sunday morning depending on your place of stay. There is one at Avondale if you live in the city or west. You can also buy from Lim supermarkets (chinese stores) or fruit world, Tai ping etc. They usually stock Indian veggies.

Sorry for not replying.
Regarding apartment...people usualy stay either in the CBD itself or in the suburbs. Rentals are bit high in the CBD compared to suburbs. Advantage of staying in the CBD (if your DH's office is in the CBD) is you can access the whole city by walk.

Regarding schools..There are lots of activities available for kids. Like playcenters. Public schools are cheaper as well as good. Try to register as soon as you reach there.
