    Why should we judge somebody based on the type of stuff they watch on tv?

    Everybody has the right to chose what they like to watch, and it does not have to comply with your choice.

    While you think they are stupid and crazy for the soaps they watch, they might as well be thinking the same about you based on the shows YOU watch!

    Oh of course, I was just wondering about the 3rd degree torture you said you were being subject to... it's not like you're in prison or anything.

    Exactly! My gripe is when people consider themselves to be of some perceived higher standard just because they do not watch these serials!

    Exactly! Thankfully there is no influence on them :) They are good in-laws (knock on wood)
    I used to be able to tune them out when I was in India ( whenever my dear granny visited - she would have control of the remote control :)) . Maybe because there was always lot of other noise in the household itself/ neighbors /from the street etc.
    But here - with no other sound and a home theater system - its almost impossible to tune out :(

    I know what you're trying to say, but think objectively. Those serials are the absolute dregs of Indian television. They are amateurish, with very poor production values. Poor writing, poor acting, poor direction, and above all, the socially regressive story lines. So if someone says I'd rather watch an old Doordarshan series like Udaan, than say, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, then most people would agree that it is indicative of a higher standard. It isn't elitist to call a spade a spade.

    When you are not working, sitting all day at home with those non stop noise from those serials, yours is small house with limited moving around space, when we can't deny the only entertainment the elders ( here in-laws & parents) having........it is really a hell.

    The only difference is we can ask parents or grandparents to change the channel to take a break. But when it comes to in laws it's difficult to hurt them..as they will feel they are restricted by DIL in their sons house :roll:

    OP adjust for sometime..start reding some books, do some crafts or browse IL....it willdefinitely distract you from those serials..thats all I can say....

    Like I said I have an awesome MIL. It took some time but I think she noticed that I avoid being in the living room vicinity when serials are playing but we watch movies with them. When she is watching alone, she watches them on the Laptop. They try and finish them when we are working ( Thanks to VOD!! yay ) and movies/musical programs are playing in the evening.

    My MIL would watch the most excruciating ones, as would my SILs and their kids. In my house these torturous serials are a no-no. I did start to watch some regional ones on cable to relax after office with a cup of tea. But couldn't stomach them when they showed women in such terrible ways. My MIL would ask my kids to sit with her when watching! I would hustle them away saying it was inappropriate for kids and she would get angry. So I became known for my tough stance and then, when at ILs' place everyone gathered around to watch such stuff, my kids would be told to get lost as their mum didn't approve...
    No moral high ground here. Just think kids shouldn't be subjected to such rubbish because they can't really judge for themselves. Adults can do what they want, but surely a little compassion and courtesy would dictate that you lower the noise levels? I guess tragedy has more impact in screeching high-pitch extra decibel levels!!laugh1smiley

    Anyway, my MIL is deaf in one ear so I just gritted my teeth. DH would at least tease her out of it. During the day if I was at work it was good. If I was out if a job I just made To-do lists and went out and did them! :)
    Then, ideasmiley struck and DH got wireless headphones.

    Then, all became Shaaaanti, Shaaaanti, Shaaanti .....except for real-life MIL/FIL/SIL/BIL/DH/UIL/AIL/CIL/anyIL drama and soap-opera going on in my life. :rotfl

    I suggest we all get together on Indus Ladies and write our own soap script. Seriously, I find mind-boggling acts by PILs here.

    songbird46 - I agree with you 100%. We dont have kids yet. But when I do , I will definitely not allow them to watch these serials!

    Agreed - and its a simple solution like you can wear headphones with music or other audio you like to tune out the TV sound. People can watch what they like and its kinda hyped to say that's torture coz they are watching it. (as long as they dont force others to watch it).

    Yes, the saas-bahu serials are incredibly stupid, but hey its someone's cup of tea, or else the TV channels would stop if TRP ratings drop :)
