HI, We are planning to move to KL on a job change. I would to like to get some advice on areas in KL where living could be comfortable for Indian population. Are there any agents to help us settle with a rental houses there? Also could I get some advise on shopping places like groceries and other basic necessities. Kindly share your respective advise and guide us thru this. Thanks in advance Regards Shubhas
There is a “little India” in KL called as Masjid India. However Malaysia has a sizable Indian population (South Indians, mainly Tamilians, followed by Punjabis, Sikhs, Gujratis). So almost all places you stay you are going to have some percentage of Indian population around you. Your housing decision should be made based on your work location (unless your work location is remote) as public transport is not all that good in KL. Yes the trains are very good, but the connectivity is limited. Taxis are available but are expensive and at a lot of locations you will not be able to hail a cab, you have to call for one. Car rental is very hassle free and you can rent one with minimum fuss. If you can give a general area where you are going to be working may be I can suggest further. Yes there are agents who will help you with rental housing. As compared to Mumbai (which is where I am from) the rental is quiet cheap. You do have Indian grocery shops which are mainly run by South Indians. However you will get Indian grocery in all supermarkets. The local cuisine too uses a lot of the same spices that we use. So your day to day shopping should not be a problem. If you are looking for spices imported from India (e.g. Everest masalas or Badashah masalas), then you will find them in many shops in Masjid India, one shop name that comes to me immediately is Hanifa. Hindi and Tamil movies are released regularly and Hindi movies have a huge following amongst locals. DVDs and VCDs of Indian movies are widely available and even video libraries stock up on Indian movies. There are even pubs which play Hindi music exclusively. All in all it's a comfortable and safe place.
Many a Thanks for the valuable info that you have posted. I am not quite sure about the work location as yet, but do u recall any of the suburbs names where there are condo accoms? Will be of great help. Thanks in advance
Sure I recall names of areas, but I don't know how it will help unless you know the approximate location you are looking for. Anyways here goes, in no particular order at all: Damansara, Bangsar, Brickfields, TTDI, Mont Kiara, Ampang, Cheras, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya, Subang Jaya, Bandar Sunway. Further away Cyber Jaya, Putra Jaya. Some of these places lay technically outside the federal state of KL but are close and are included colloquially in KL. Hope this helps.
Shubha, It is easier if your home is closer to the working place. Firstly find out the area where you will be working and then we can say which is closer to it. You can google map and look for the places, also there are good real estate agents. Welcome to Malaysia, Jaya
Thanks Bliss Thanks Jaya, We are yet to know our job location, I think once I get that, we can decide, You guys have been of real help with regards to your suggestions. Thanks once again. Regards Shubhas
Just to add on - on shopping for groceries- you can also go to Brickfields(also known as little india) here you can get all sorts of spice and other stuff from India. (MTR/Achi/Everest/Amul/Sakthi etc etc) Also this place will be heaven for you if you are vegetarian as here you can easily find many veg restaurants.
Yea, we are vegetarians and will deftly find it interesting to eat out if there are many restaurants there..Anyway, waiting for the same. Thanks Regards Shubhas
