If ur husband work in downtown, try apartment in suburbs. U can try Arlington heights ,which has frequent trains to union station or buffalo grove (less frequent train). Also u can try Brairwood terrace apartment in prospect heights which has 80% Indians and near to railway station but trains are not frequent.(many go to downtown from here)

Getting an apartment in a decent locality under $1000 is not easy at all. Most 2 bhks start at 1200 at the very minimum. You might want to consider increasing the rent you pay or move to a far off suburb.

There are some apartment complexes in some suburbs like Schaumburg, Wheeling or Mount prospect where Indians are in a majority but its hard to pin point complexes with Indians as a rule. Imagine if I asked you - please let me know of an apartment complex in Hyderabad which has a majority of Punjabis, would you be able to point to it? That said, Chicago and many of its suburbs does have a sizeable Indian population, so you would definitely meet someone or the other.

In general Naperville, Schaumburg and portions of Arlington heights/Mount prospect have lots of Indians.

Good luck with your move. Feel free to post more queries.

Do you mean apartments in the Devon avenue, Chicago? That's where many Indian/Pakistan restaurants, grocery stores exist. I do not recommend living there. Its very congested and the schools are not good (assuming you will continue living there when you kiddo starts elementary school).

If you want a short commute then look at Evanston and Oak park - these suburbs are the closest to Chicago with excellent transportation options and good schools. However you will not run into many Indians especially from the IT consulting world.

If you do not mind a slightly longer commute (around an hour - I am talking door to door) with Metra access, then Arlington heights is good with apartments cheaper than the above mentioned suburbs and good schools.
