    Betting-on-corpses protest brings Manikarnika to a halt

    VARANASI: Since time immemorial, cremation rituals have never stopped at Manikarnika Ghat the way they were for an hour on Monday afternoon.

    There was no cremation during the hour-long protest against delay in arrest of persons who had alleged that betting, running into crores of rupees on the number of corpses arriving at the ghat, had become a flourishing business in the ancient city of salvation.

    Recently, some news channels had aired report in which some individuals in masks made these allegations of large-scale betting on the number of corpses arriving at the ghat for cremation on daily basis.

    We have heard of Betting on price of commodities, horse race, and sports. The latest one seems to be atrocious. People have no shame to stoop to so low and make money out of dead bodies. From spot fixing and match fixing, now it seems the gamblers have started corpse fixing.

    I wish that people should at least spare the dead from betting.

    When I read this I felt so bad.
    People are betting on dead bodies! It is disgusting even to think about it.
    A shameful act! People have become so greedy and mean minded!

    Crazy heartless beings betting on the lifeless.

    Dear Mrs.Srinivasan:

    I am deeply pained to know that betting has spread from commodities and horses to corpses. I have heard from many learned people that dying in Varanasi is a sign of an excellent birth to come or liberation. Now, after hearing this, I feel the dead are not allowed to leave the world peacefully. Is it sign of Kali Yuga getting closer to its finish line? How much more a man can stoop down? Is it time for the Creator to come in to reestablish Sanatana Dharma and commence a golden period? Time will tell.
