Chennai realtor held for big bay fraud
The police have arrested a politically powerful realtor who made hundreds of crores of rupees by literally selling the “Bay of Bengal” as “land” to many companies, including Indian Oil Corporation.

Devadas Reddy, 60, arrested from Minjur, near Chennai, is said to be worth around Rs 1,000 crores. Apart from the “sea”, he had also sold river beds and canals to companies in the suburban northern industrial belt as well as to individuals.

Reddy’s strategy was to convince buyers that the sea had encroached upon the particular area, and once the sea receded the buyer could take possession of the land.

Impressed by his smooth talk, IOC had paid Rs 26 crores for 106 acres of land. But when IOC’s legal department tried to verify the documents they found that many of the survey numbers listed were either seashore, or river beds or canals.

Fake class 12 mark sheet scam busted in Tamilnad

A major fake marksheet scam has been unearthed in Tamil Nadu. Over 50 students who applied for engineering admissions have been found to have furnished fake marksheets of class 12th state board. The authorities are now keeping a close watch on all students.

The allotment of seats in engineering colleges to the suspected students has been withheld. A police complaint has been filed and the state government says it will take criminal action against offenders.

"Submitting fake certificates is not a joke. They are indulging in criminal activities and that is why we will have to take criminal action against them," said Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy.

It is a demand echoed by most parents and students.

"This is so not fair. We study so hard and get marks and because of these people, we lose out," said a student.

"Such people should be given very strict punishment," said the parent of another student.

This is the second such racket involving students after allegations of a possible seat selling racket in engineering colleges came up a few days ago. It is perhaps time now for the state education department to look into the admission process more seriously.
