I have read the following facts in a book and i wud like to share with all

Water Retention is one of the main causes of weight gain in people who are exercising and following a healthy diet but couldnt loose weight.
A simple test to find out whether a person has water retention or not..Press the skin on your thighs or your arms and if the skin wrinkles after u pinch it,u have water retention.

    Main reasons for water retention
1.Less intake of water.. When u drink less amount of water, the kidneys could not filter the toxins out of the body and they get stored in the muscles, making them weak and flabby.
    2.Excess Salt intake
Our body needs only 2-3 grams of salt a day for normal functioning.Todays junk foods, canned foods have lots of salt which in turn affects our health.

Water retention could result in weakening of bones and muscles. This make us to more prone to cramps and injuries. In the long run,it could result in high BP and hypertension..

So the best way to cure water retention is to have lots of water..

How much water should you drink??
The amount of water depends on the height and weight of the individual.
There is a simple calculation to find the amount of water u need to intake...

Amount of water = your Weight / 30

For example,if you weigh 70 kg, then u need to take 2.3 litres of water daily.

    Hi Aabhi and Devapriyaa,

I heard this on TV: While we are asleep the saliva that collects in the mouth is beneficial to our health. So when we drink water on rising we can get the full advantage of that saliva.

I prefer to soak, overnight, a few methi seeds in a glass of water and drink it in the morning. The methi seeds help to prevent/control diabetes as well as bloating (which could be due to constipation).

    Hope this tip is helpful.

    Welcome srisha,

If you are pregnant, a good approach is to eat to satisfy your appetite and continue to monitor your weight. A normal weight gain over the course of a pregnancy is around 10–13kg for women who have a healthy pre-conception weight.

A varied diet generally provides our bodies with enough of each vitamin and mineral each day. However, pregnant women may need supplements of particular vitamins or minerals. Be advised by your doctor before taking supplements.
A well balanced diet is more important when you are pregnant, since what you eat has to meet your unborn baby's needs as well as your own requirements. The first three months of pregnancy is important as most of the physical and mental growth of the baby takes place during this time. The principal organs both external and internal and the nervous system of the baby form within this period. So it is important to eat well from the beginning itself even if you have discomforts like nausea etc. Like wise babies growth is rapid during the last three months of pregnancy. A nutritious diet during this period is essential for normal birth weight of the baby.
Pregnant women need to focus on boosting their nutritional intake, rather than their energy (kilojoule) intake. A folic acid (folate) supplement should be taken prior to conception and for the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Small regular snacks may help nausea or morning sickness.

    Healthy foods for pregnant women
It is important to choose a wide variety of foods to ensure the nutritional needs of both mother and baby are met. Try to eat:

    • Lots of fruit and vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals
    • Moderate amounts of low fat dairy foods
    • Small amounts of foods high in fat, sugar and salt
    • Chicken and fish
    • Dried beans
    • Nuts and seeds
    • Green leafy vegetables.
    Folic acid (folate) and pregnancy
Folate (known as folic acid when added to foods) is a B-group vitamin found in a variety of foods.

As well as a healthy diet, it is recommended that women planning a pregnancy take an additional 400 micrograms of folic acid as a supplement or in the form of fortified foods a month before and three months after conception to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Folate taken over this period can prevent up to seven out of 10 cases of neural tube defects.

    Folate in your diet
Excellent food sources of folate include:
    • Broccoli
    • Chick peas
    • Dried beans
    • Spinach
    • Cabbage
    • Cauliflower
    • Oranges
    • Orange juice
    • Peas
    • Potato
    • Strawberries
    • Tomato
    • Unsalted peanuts
    • Walnuts.
The recommended daily intake of iron during pregnancy is 27mg per day (9mg per day more than that for non-pregnant women). The amount needed depends on the amount of iron the woman has ‘stored’ in her body prior to pregnancy. If your iron stores are very low, you may need to get more from supplements. It is important to discuss your need for supplements with your doctor, as iron can be toxic in large amounts.

    Eating for two
There is no need to eat more food during pregnancy. It is recommended that for the first trimester, a woman’s energy (kilojoule) intake should remain about the same as it was prior to the pregnancy. During the second and third trimesters, energy requirements should increase by about 600kJ a day. Increasing fruit intake to four serves each day (from the recommended two serves for non-pregnant women) will provide all the extra energy needed.
While the common Indian advice is to eat for two but we must keep in mind that it is not two grownups we have to eat for. It is for a baby that is 3 - 4 kgs in weight. So focus on nutrition, rather than the quantity of the food you eat.
This is for a normal pregnancy with a single baby. If you are having multiple babies or if you have any special health conditions, please talk to your doctor.

The dangers of dieting while pregnant
Some women fear the extra weight gain of pregnancy and decide to eat sparingly to avoid putting on body fat. Restricted eating or crash dieting in any form while pregnant can seriously compromise your health and that of your baby.

The extra energy that is required during pregnancy is only 300 kcal/day and any consumption above this will only add empty calories and weight to the mother. This is only about 15% more than usual Indian food quantities.

Pregnancy diet - What foods should I eat?

For meal planning, Indian foods have been divided into different groups.
    • Cereals & Grains
    • Pulses & Beans
    • Milk and Milk products
    • Green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, tubers and roots
    • Fruits
    Avoid:
Keep off canned and processed foods, spicy foods, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sugary foods such as cakes, cookies, candies, sodas and colas and reduce your salt intake as far as possible.

The amount of food that you can eat during pregnancy is dependent on your physical activity, your pre-pregnant weight, and presence of any illness.
