Hi Vanathi, We probably want to have one abbreviation list for the entire community. So, if the same abbreviation stands for two things, let people decipher based on the context. However, we don't want to have the same abbreviation for two things that could be used in the same context. For example, is SIL for Sister-in-Law or Son-in-Law? If SIL should stand for Sister-in-Law, what should Son-in-Law abbreviated as? Can you make a recommendation on this? Thanks. Other IL'ites, please chime with yours. Thanks.
Hi Malathy, My My 2cents Son-in-law : SNIL Sister-in-law: SIL/SSIL One more thing, people refer to indus ladies and inlaws using the same abbreviation IL. Probably that also needs to be differentiated. Cheers Krithika
My God, at this rate, not a thread, but a Mini-sub-forum is required for short forms!! I use CV for chinna vengayam in my forum, but it is also chitvish!! Only thing is, one cannot make VK (vatha kuzambu) with the former, but not with the latter! The list is endless, perhaps! Love, Chithra.
Dear Chithra Madam Hee!! Hee!!! Nice post! Dear Malathy My My 2cents. I frankly don't think this is going to work!.
Nice one Chithra Hi Sunitha, Thanks for the candid feedback. What can we do to make it work? The problem we are trying to solve is this - we want to make it less tedious for people to use commonly used long phrases. Love your thoughts.
This is turning into a bigger project than I anticipated when I first made the suggestion! The problem is that IL is so vast and covers almost everything under the sun. So it's going to be really hard to finalize a list for the whole community. I am completely stumped right now - let me think about it and see if I can come up with anything. I really hope other people will have some bright ideas. One more to the list - FB - feedback A question - what about phrases like BTW- by the way and common abbreviations like pls - please and abt - about - allowed or not? Vanathi.
Dear Malathy I feel some abbreviations like FIL,MIL,SIL etc are quite commonly understood by all.The new one here is IL which in Indusladies,we always have to re-read to understand whether it stands for in-laws or Indusladies. The ones that many people don't understand are things like TTC,TIA etc which are typically chat style ones.No offense to anyone here but whenever I read the pregnancy, infants, toddlers sections these days,I don't understand a lot of abbreviations--- eg. AF for periods ?Then I google to find that out.It is really time consuming to do this...instead why not just say periods, easier, isn't it?Sorry,I don't belong to the SMS generation,so it is quite difficult to understand certain things.:hide: What I am saying is we are complicating matters here-SNIL,SSIL,ILW...why not just leave it alone.Let's say we do implement this...do you really think anyone is going to follow this...do you really think people are going to come to this thread, then read what is allowed and then make a post..That is not going to happen. Ok,let's say, someone posts something with an abbreviation that is not in the allowed list...are the moderators going to sit and check this and moderate(I am sure they already have a lot of other things to do) or is some member going to put a counter post asking the original poster to edit her post? This will become like opening a pandora's box!!!Drowning
