I wish saree was fashionable in USA.

Who cares if you are Coffee, Chocolate, Vanilla, or Creme?

All ladies should be able to wear saree if they desire.

And I'm certain it can be worn on Metro, Subway, Tube!

Here are some sarees that would be office appropriate - mainly linen fabric, cool or muted colors:

I've seen few desi ladies wear skin-fitting salwar during the summer months.

Somehow I need the courage to wear saree, through the metro, to the office .....

First I need to learn to drape one!

Why does she keep apologizing for her tummy? In India, it's considered just fine. Certainly better than the 6-pack on ladies!

CE - Your post makes me crave saree. The other day I was all decked up in a kanchipuram saree, jimikis, necklace, bangles, jasmine flowers in my hair, pottu and my traditional mangalyam and had to take my equally decked up DD to Starbucks(she was too hungry to get home). I usually don't wear any of the above but it was a dear friend's daughter's arangetram and I had to go dressed up. I got so many compliments from everyone there. Many women wanted to know where they could buy my tiny necklace. Didn't know how to explain properly what a mangalyam meant. I came home and my DH asked me if I went out to Starbucks like "that".

I totally don't mind wearing salwar or sari (or even bharathnatyam getup) in public, doing my normal errands, Starbucks runs, schools. At work, i like wearing boots or covered shoes, which don't suit these outfits, and I don't want to be distracted by adjusting my sari while working. Oh, and my work has a dress code: business casual. Salwar and sari's are best with open-toed shoes, which I can't wear to work. I guess I match my clothes to footwear...

To be honest, dressing up in a sari or salwar, is very cool, and Americans think it's pretty. You shouldn't feel self-conscious by wearing it. The only thing that annoys me, is when some women wear indian clothes out and about, but in a slobby way, with unkempt hair and looking shabby. It's embarrassing...
