    Hi ladies,

I want to share this incident happened to me to get your comments.

Today in my office, during lunch time, I was talking to my friend on cell phone , I went to ladies room to talk as it will be disturbing to others to talk in cubicle. I cannot go out of the building easily as I am too inside the building and it takes atleast 6 to 7 minutes walk to go out. so I went to ladies room to talk , it is restroom actually also with facility of extended room with two chairs to sit.

An american working here came to use the restroom while I was talking, when she is leaving the room, she whispered with very angry face and angry gesture something "you are talking too much or somethingn like you are talking loud" I am just annoyed at her comment, she said that with angry face and left immeditely, it took some time for me to realize that she got pissed off.

I dont understand why she behaved like that, is it because she got disturbed with her work in toilet :crazy , then I realized why she used toilet flush continuously 4 to 5 times with out gap, it is just showing her frustration on me. :bonk after coming back to room to wash her hands, she put her book on table with loud sound, later I realized that too. Is it showing racism , I dont see my mistake as I was talking in medium voice with my conscious that too in ladies room(which is private and no disturbance to outside).

I dont want to go and talk to her again on this issue as I know these people will show domination and can go to any extent to complain anything. I was just quiet. But I felt very bad, whats wrong with these people, cant they bear us??:rant

    Hi Sujatha,

Some people are just more highly strung than others. Could be that she is probably having a tough day, week (life?). This is a tough economy and a lot of people are pretty stressed out and are at a higher risk of snapping at others.

There is an amru dude that sits near my cubicle. I do not have to interact with him but I can hear him talking to others. His tone and way of speaking is quite weird and rude. Some people are just more negative than others.

Do you have to interact with this person routinely?

    BeeAmma,

thanks for your response. No, I dont have interaction with that lady on daily basis, I have no connection with her work wise.

As you said, yes the stress could make her behave like that, but these people are very impatient and show off that impatience on their face easily.

Lately I have seen that some of the offices have this policy of no cell phones in the restrooms. Yes I had been to couple of offices for client visit and saw no cellphones sign on the restroom doors. Funnily its on the womans restroom door :)

Yes in both the offices. One way its good as atleast in restroom for those couple of mins there is no phone, no boss and no talk . I did experience that there are some woman who speak loudly, yell, fight and argue over phone on a high pitch and its kind of public nuisance.dont take it personal :) might be that lady is having a tough day

Best thing is might be take a walk out side office and talk, even though it means leaving your desk. Your privacy and others privacy would be intact.

    SKalluri,

There is a strict 'no cellphone usage in restrooms' policy in lot of firms which is implicitly understood. Most of the firms I was with do not entertain cell phone talks in bathrooms.

As per the bathroom etiquette it is not advisable to talk on cell phone.

Probably the lady in question did not appreciate you violating this rule and threw some menacing glances back at you.

I agree that she should have either explained this to you or spoken softly but not too harsh to hurt your feelings.

Do not think much about it.It is not racially motivated act.

    Srividya and Sabitha,

Thanks for your replies. the rule of not using cell phones in restrooms may be policy in some firms, but in my work place, I see many people including americans using cell phones in restrooms, that why I freely used that too in lunch time.

Yeah I know:) I understand too...because in my current work place, when I joined everyone used to rush into restrooms and talk loudly over phone and the next week there was a big tag on restroom door saying no cell phone conversations inside restroom. there might have been someone who complained..

So who knows down the line you too would see that tag on your office restroom door..but really in my personal opinion its sometimes irritating. that too when people talk in diff. languages.

Cellphone conversations in loud manner are always like invading privacy of others.

chill maa....lets nto follow the crowd and lead the path by showing the right way:idea

    Srividya,

Just want to tell you.. I didnot use loud voice as you may be expected and thats why warning that we may also get notice of no use of cell phones on restrooms next week, and as I said before I was very conscious of my voice. I am going through some tough times and stress in life and sharing with my friend, on top of this insecurity , depression, the behaviour of that lady annoyed me and people talking only rules in this forum is discouraging me, I know you are talking about right way of behaviour, I accept it 100%, but my present situation is not making me to accept that. sorry to say this.

    Sujatha.

Sorry maa I didnt mean that you are talking loudly...or you were doing something wrong..what I meant was in our officeI found that..but again people like that lady who was rude to you.....go n complain...I gave you example of how things are taken to that level of tagging no cellphones posters etc...didnt mean that you were doing something wrong.

Ofcourse I also agree that not all times we get to run out of the building for a 5 min chat on cellphone.

    Skalluri,

Srividya and I were just presenting a different angle to the situation since you have mentioned that

"But I felt very bad, whats wrong with these people, cant they bear us??:rant"

As you mentioned that you are going through some stress in personal life, do not take this incident to heart.Perhaps the lady who spoke to you harshly is going through more unpleasant stuff in her own life and has vented her feelings on you.

We are not trying to imbibe acceptable societal etiquette in you nor defending the lady but only trying to tell you that things may not always seem to be what you see and hear. The best you can do is ignore and do not let these petty incidents make your life miserable.

We are just virtual people out there and if you feel that our replies in this forum are discouraging you then I would again and again say that do not take it personal. We are just dealing with a situation and trying to analyze why someone might have behaved the way they did.You taking this to heart only says that you are sensitive to what people comment about you and your behaviour.Take these kind of remarks [ includes my post if you disagree] with a pinch of salt.At the end of the day no one has any hard feelings here ..:thumbsup
