how to send laptop to India?

    I bought a laptop for a very poor friend of mine, hoping to make her happy by sending it to her. However, by doing some research online, I found out that customs department can hold it and not release it.

    I bought the laptop really cheap for $400, but they may reassess the value and arrive at a much higher custom duty. Since it is a gift, people told me to not leave invoice in the packet. On the other hand, some people told me to leave it in there as a proof of the actual price. This is all very confusing for me.

    Any suggestions about my situation?

    I obviously do not know anybody who's going to India who would take it for me, so please don't suggest that!

    OP, The best way to send a laptop to India is thru someone going there. I don't know any other way which is as cheap as this.Ask around from friends or relatives who live in same city as your friend.Good Luck.

    I dont think any courier service would agree to ship a laptop overseas. I tried it for a month last year but then had to send it with a friend only.

    Due to custom restrictions, its not advisable to ship it to India.

    I don't have any friends going to India in near future :(

    Did you try USPS? Did they turn you down too?

    You can ship it. It will cost around $150.

    I would rather you have someone buy it in India and give.

    Alternative is to wait for your next visit.

    USPS costs around $70. When you said $150, are you including the custom duty fees?

    I don't think any courier will do this.

    Find some one who is travelling to India.

    I purchased my laptop from US ( friend's brother is there, and when he was travelling to here, he brought it)
