How to remove corns on feet ?

My husband's colleagues son [15 yrs.] is having corns on the soles of his feet for past 3 months or so. He was unknowingly wearing snowboots which had a small hole on the bottom, which caused the corns to develop. They have changed his shoes and also tried the Dr.Scholls corn removal strips for over 2 months, but it only softens the skin around the corn. No amount of warm water massage or pumice stone is helping in getting that hard skin off.
They are hesitating to go to clinic & get it surgically removed b'cos someone has told them that if you remove using scalpel then the corn will just come in another place, and keep coming often. Is this true ?

Is there any home-remedy they can try which can ease the boy's pain especially as he is on school football team. Or any other effective over-the-counter product they can get in drugstore, please recommend.
