    Dear ladies,

Could you all please share useful tips on how to maintain cotton clothes, esp. ones that run color. How can you get the color fixed and use it for a reasonable period of time.

I once read somewhere that by adding rock salt and leaving the new garment overnight the colours wont fade after consecutive washes...I dont know if it was true and didnt dare try to soak clothes overnight! If any of you are aware of these things, please share with us.

    Thanks
    Poornima.

No no, dont soak coloured clothes ovenight. Colour will definitely bleed. Dont soak at all. Just wash seperate with bar soap quickly and dry immediately. They also say first wash in dry cleaners will Fix colour. No. it is not true. I have tried. A cloth with no guaranteed fast colour will bleed whatever we do. Sometimes, after 2 or 3 wash, it stops. Sometimes it does not, but even then there may be no fading. Depends on cloth.

    Hi Poornima,

For the first wash in a seperate bucket, pour 1/2 bucket water and add 15 to 20 ml of 'kerosin' /மண்ணெண்ணை and put the cloth. Soak it well for 10 min. Then dry it. Dont use soap powder or soap for the first time. The colours will not go because of kerosin. And the next time, you can wash it as usual. Try and give me a feed back.

    Dear Swarnalata,

Thanks for the caution!! I wash cotton salwars or sarees only after using it for 3 times ( worn sparingly ). I dip, dip, dip and just dry them. Just wash with mild soap and gently scrub the material. The more the color goes off, the sooner it fades. As you say, depends on the fabric too. And yes..I dont dry clean my clothes at all!

    Thanks
    Poornima.

    Hi Nandu,

from my grand mother's period we are doing it. If you feel the kerosin smell, again wash it with soap. That is all. We use to wash my grandmother's saree ( chinalam pattu) like this. When you put the saree under sun the smell will go off. It wont harm your skin.
