How safe is Durham, NC?

Hi ladies,

My husband has been offered admission for his PhD in Duke university. So we may move to durham in fall 2010. But when I googled about the areas around duke, I see lots of crime like robbery, assault, house break-in happening frequently in Durham. Crime rate in Durham is higher compared to other states.

I would like to get a picture about current situation from people living in Durham, NC. Please share your experience. Also please suggest me some safe apartments around Duke.
