    alpsheidi Welcome to IL.

you may use cloth bags for storing veggies in refrigerator. I do.
you may store food items in steel containers.
For cereals if you are not comfortable with glass jars, then you may go for good grade plastic containers. check their life while purchasing accordingly you may change them if you wish. Else go for steel storage containers.

ranjithaprakash, welcome to IL. If non smoker, it could be like you said use of plastics or it could be due to preservatives and other chemcials added to the readymade food stuffs viz., sauce, soup powders, ready to eat food, etc. thanks for joining in.

Not all plastic containers are safe for long-term use. Bottled water containers are designed for one time use only. Containers that are BPA free are safe for long-term use. But I still prefer glass containers. Anyway, does anyone know how long can I use plastic containers that is BPA free? Thanks!

Very nice and informative and this is very helpful too, though I don't love to use plastics but very less options available as its substitute. Metals are heavy. Also, better not to use any bottles which are not reusable, it can leads to cancer.

Stephanie08 you told "Bottled water containers are designed for one time use only". We saw people using it for more than 2 yr or more. Also see it got a iron coat still people are using it. What can happen? Can it cause cancer?
