Not posting for medical advice. I just need some thoughts or suggestions.

My husband is 42 years old and never had high blood pressure before. He has been complaining about dizziness, fever, and chills for the past week. He saw the primary doctor and he did some blood work.
Blood work was normal except for elevated cholesterol. The doctor told him to do some diet changes and asked him to come back in 3 months.

My husband noticed a small bump on his underarms and it started as a pimple. The size increased a bit the next day and we went immediately to the ER. The ER doctor said it's an abscess and has to be drained out. They did the procedure.

When they checked my husband's vitals when we were there, the blood pressure was very high. When we were in the lobby, they said his blood pressure was very low and checked again and it came out high. Like 172/105. She sent us to the room and they checked a few times there and it was always elevated. 160/100.

I was very concerned about this high BP values and asked the Dr. He said they don't treat blood pressure here and my husband is otherwise asymptomatic. Told us to follow up with my primary care doctor.

They checked before we left and it was around 160/103. So the Dr gave us a very mild dosage of blood pressure medicine and asked us to follow up with PCP on Monday. They said they don't treat the high BP when the patient didn't have other symptoms right now.

We came home and I checked his blood pressure at home and it was elevated again. We are trying to be calm and wait to see the PCP next week. My husband is very worried why the values are showing this high suddenly and constantly elevated.

Other than medicines, anything that helps to bring down the blood pressure? Does anyone have had high blood pressure before? Whether it takes a while to drop down?

We saw the primary care doctor and he put him on a new medicine. He said it takes a few weeks for the medicine to kick start.
    Thanks.

You can try to follow the DASH diet. There should be lots of information online. You could also book an appointment with a cardiologist to make sure there’s nothing else going on.

Thank you. Will check it out about this diet.
I asked about seeing a cardiologist with my primary doctor. She said she don't think it's necessary at this point. I am not convinced though.
May be I should book an appointment and check it, just for our peace of mind. Because we aren't sure why the blood pressure suddenly spiked very high when the blood pressure was always within normal until now. Without any triggers too.

Generally, high BP is caused mostly by the following reasons:

    1) Diet high in sodium, saturated and trans fat, and low in pottasium can contribute to high BP.
    2) Being overweight or obese puts extra strain on the cardivascular system, increasing the risk of hypertension.
    3) Lack of regular physical activity is a major risk factor
    4) Excessive alcohol intake can raise blood pressure
    5) Smoking damages blood vessels and increase the risk of hypertension.
    6) Stress: Chronic stress can elevate hormone levels that raise blood pressure.
    7) Sleep: Poor sleep or sleep disorders like sleep apnea can also contribute to high BP.

You are the best judge to find out which one of these 7 factors contribute the most for his high BP.

I have been on BP medication since 1995 (I was 41 years old at that time) and now I am 71 years old and still on medication. My high blood pressure started because of high level of work-related stress and long hours of working (14 hours a day). Physical activity became almost negligible during that period of 9 years. I don't consume alcohol but used to smoke a lot when I was young but stopped smoking later. I am definitely overweight. However, I am careful in taking low sodium food and taking my medicines regularly.
