    Hi Indians,

I am a resident of chennai. After moving to a different flat, we have faced 4 times in a span of 7 months, the EB meter was replaced fr the below reasons.

    1. Stops running.

    2. Runs too fast like chennai auto meters.

    3. Stops running exclusively at x99 counters.

I am not alone in this. My neighbour also faces similar problem. We have been standing at our EB office very often as a sincere citizen to get the Electricity meter replaced. When we made complaint to the EB office, th eline man says, they do know abt this problem abt faulty meters at x99 counters, fast calibrated meters which shows more for less consumption. But what to do? Ie the way, the meters are supplied to them from BIG companies like BHEL and others....

More over since the consumption pattern varies for summer (Mar to June) and during the rest of the season, its very less consumption because of AC's not being used.
But the EB rule doesn't care abt it. It just averages the previous 2 bills and gives you an amount if the meter stops running. Typically you end up paying more for what you have not used.

Would like to know how many of you have faced such situations and also how to determine whether the EB meter is running properly with/without Air conditioner on.

When AC is switched on, the needle runs faster than our Olympian gold medalist P.T.Usha and during these times, it also breaks down.:)--

I have decided to switch over to a different flat if problem persists....
But would like to know am I alone in this EB meter race?

    Dear Leela,
We also had the meter problem. Ours is an independant house consisting ground and first floor. We have separate meters. Our groundfloor is rented out and the meter stopped working. We gave a complaint, the EB people came and took away the meter. But the meter was replaced after six months and they were charging the average. But our tenants were not using any electrical gadgets, other than mixie. The old type of meters were replaced by eletronic ones and after that the meter pulse rate was changed and so the meter shows more units now. But as there was no protest from the public it is continuing.
    Love,
    Pushpavalli

    Hi Tamilnadu Ilites,

Pls check this link to klnow how the EB pricing is calculated.

    tamil nadu electricity board

I did as per this rule. But did not match with what the line man has calculated.

Any one has data on recent tariff rates applicable in Tamilnadu.

Hope this helps us in future to save Energy...

    Dear Pushpa,

Thank You for sharing your experience. Hope to hear from more people.

They have installed all the meters in our locality outside our houses on electricity poles. The missmanaged mayhem of entangled electricity wires is very big eye sore and dangerous too. Though meters are as fast as ever.

I have a somewhat similar problem, ie, my present meter runs too fast. My original one, which was perfectly ok, was changed by the EB people because the man they sent to check, said it was not running when the load was too low. The result is the consumption which was just about 3 units a day is now shown to be about 8 by the new meter!! Is there a way to check if the meter is running ok? Is there any independent authority whose help we can request to check the meter? I feel that the TNEB is acting arbitrarily without any accountablility to the consumer.

If your electric meter is not working you have to register a complaint with the electricity office of your suburb and do take an acknowledgement. One of their representative will visit your place and examine the meter. Also please keep paying all your bills regularly. Else, they will slap unwanted fine.

In Navi Mumbai, it was a regular feature but now they come and immediately repair or replace it.

After installing Electronic Meter the bill amount increases.

    Hi ferret,

Are you sure your consumption is only 3 units. Just try to check out your consumtion manually and then work out...and then go in to file a complaint.

There is not independent authority to check the meter. and you cannot allow for any checks also...i think it will be against the tneb's rules...

Was it only yours or there were others with the same complaint...

    Hi ferret,

Recently TNEB has started taking some actions to prevent energy theft/loss due to slow meters and not running meters. This would bring in more kittyto TNEB. These are driven due to their structural change recommendations and also due to shortage of power.

There are lots of such EB meters which do not show actual consumption while there are many that run like race horses.

You could basically look at your average consumption by analysing what are the electronic devices/appliances you use regularly and how long?

Nowadays, its quiet common in Chennai to have a home with
    1. TV
    2. Fridge
    3. Mixie
    4. Grinder
    5. Mobile charging (multiple)
    6. fan
    7. A/c
    8. Regular lights

Pls average out the duration of run and check their power ratings.

You will be able to come to a conclusion.

Some of the steps you can perform are

    1. Switch off the main, check the meter stability first.
    2. Turn on each devices one by one and check how the meter is running?
    3. Notice for which device , the meter runs fast. Check the power ratings of that device.?

Motor devices like mixie and grinder/A/c are supposed to be power consumers.

Last but not least, you can complain to TNEB about the fast running meter.
8 units per day seems to be an average consumption without a/c.

    Good luck!!

    leelal,

I too thought 8 units is a good average for chennai.

People get lcd monitors, lcd tv's and still expect their meters will not show any hike.bonk

I would also suggest look at the power consumption when you are going in to look at appliances...

I know a friend who brought a microwave and had a great first month..when her bill came, she came back and started..hey you did not tell me...:spin
