Smelly Hair Syndrome is an unpleasant odor coming from the hair and scalp which can haunt people of any age.It can be caused due to various reasons such as poor hygiene, bacterial infections, fungal infections, excessive sweating, oily scalp, pollution, hormonal imbalances, etc.

Here are are a few home remedies to treat smelly scalp.

Tea Tree oil - Mix little tea tree oil in a cup of water or in a carrier oil of your choice.Few carrier oils are coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil, almond oil.Apply it thoroughly on your scalp.Leave for 30 minutes and wash with a mild shampoo.Repeat once a week.

    Apple Cider Vinegar
    - Mix 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar with 1 cup water. Rinse hair with this solution.Leave for 2-3 minutes and then wash with normal water.

Lemon juice - Add 2 tsp lemon juice in one cup of water. After you shampoo, massage the mixture thoroughly on your scalp and hair and leave it for few minutes.Wash with normal water.Repeat 1-2 times a week.

Baking soda - Make a smooth paste by mixing 3 parts of baking soda with 1 part of water.Apply the paste evenly on your damp hair after washing it with water.Leave for 5-10 minutes and wash with normal water. Repeat once a week.By 4th week the odor vanishes resulting in healthy hair.

Natural shampoos for oily hair and scalp can also be used for better results. Here are few...

    Reeta lemon shampoo
Soak a cup of reeta powder/reeta balls overnight in a mug of soft water.Squeeze and strain the water in the morning and mix with a tbsp of lemon juice.Wet your hair and apply to scalp liberally and rub well. This creates froth.Wash your scalp with cold or lukewarm soft water till the froth leaves.Repeat twice or thrice a week as needed.

    Neem shampoo

Mix fresh neem leaves paste or powder with reeta juice, apply this homemade shampoo to hair and scalp.Scrub and rinse.Repeat 2 to 3 times a week. The antiseptic properties in Neem helps in treating scalp infections and ward off the smelly hair.
