one of my friends makes the same sathumaavu with 23 items ramya.. as siddusahana says,
you can add redrice (instead of rice), oats, wheat, roasted chana dal, barley, soyabean (sometimes i add roasted soya flour), some add peanuts, sago too..

I make for me with more soya flour, flax seeds for the phyto estrogen..

and if you have ideas of adding salt, reduce the number of cardamom as it does not taste the same as in sugar..

@shanvy I make the sathu maavu for myself with red rice, soy and oats. But for LO I prefer to add more nutritious ingredients. After all they have to gain weight!

@siddusahana I make rasam for LO in a similar way. I am not able to tell if she likes it or not. If she eats it 1 day, she does not eat the similar thing the next day.

i find that friend of mine adding all this and more, i think i should ask her what else..

ramya red rice is very nutritious and healthy and it does not cause weight loss..

soy flour should not be added to kids unless prescribed by doctors..i use it for me, because of need of estrogen (my diet is post menopause from 36..because of surgery)

Oats is again healthy, when here in the case of sathumaavu it is added to lots of other ingredients..

everything is trial and error, some simple things don't go well for some kids..even gluten allergy or peanut..so it is mainly our own discretion...

and always try anything for the lo just a few spoons..and don't become over enthu when she complete the bowl of food today, and make more tommorrow, the kiddo will have a mood of her own and will not even touch it that day...just try one thing once a week..that way variety happens and also she will get a taste of everything...

when my DD was around 8-9 months, i started giving her a multigrain-multi pulses powder in the form of a porridge..this can be given just like that after cooking with water and ghee or we can add rasam or curds to it.

    grains:
    1.rice
    2.wheat
    3.ragi
    4.jowar
    5.bajra

    pulses:
    1.urad dal
    2.bengal gram
    3.moong dal
    4.tuvar dal
    5.soyabeans
    6.black eyed beans

    nuts:
    1.groundnuts
    2.cashewnuts
    3.badam

    misc:
    1.sago seeds
    2. cardamom 3-4 pods for fragnance if desired

wash each of these(except nuts and misc items) seperately and then put them under sun till they become dry..then dry roast each of them seperately..then add all of them and grind in a mixie till a little coarse mixture is ready..this can be saved upto 2-3 months even outside the fridge..

daily cook a spoon of this in boiling water (increasing the quantity slowly) and feed the kid..add ghee..also you may add salt if desired..this can be mixed with rasam or curd also

here the rice will be of 1/2 quantity and the remaining ingredients should be of the remaining half..

you can also add any other pulses or grains according to your availability

since once grown up, the kids anyway wont eat all this healthy stuff..so its better to include in their diet at an early stage..

@shanvy I thought red rice helps in weight loss too. Or atleast it does not help in gaining as much weight as regular rice.

I did become over enthu the first time my LO finished her bowl of sathu maavu. I was super thrilled. But of course LO's bring us back to reality. She did not eat sathu maavu the next day or even for that matter the next week!

I do give soy yogurts to DD (Thanks to milk allergy). In fact I mix the sathu maavu in soy milk now that LO 1 year old.

    hydee,
red rice and brown basmati are two different things dearie..just use parboiled rice if you don't have red rice...but i am sure you will get the matta rice there...

    Ramya,

redrice is healthier because bran is intact and usually it is not polished like the regular rice we eat..and maybe that is the reason it has got added to weight loss..and carb is a carb whether it is from red or white..only thing is the complexity of the carb..

    sushma,

in my home, the kids have to have this porridge when i make, even my fil..no choice..mommy is hitler.. and no readymade cereal breakfast for us...
