Gangaur festival is a big festival for girls and married women in Rajasthan. This festival is dedicated to Gauri or Parvati. The festival begins the day after holi. During this festival the images of Gauri are decorated. The married women pray for the well-being of their husband, while the unmarried girls pray for a husband of their choice. The women folk gather ashes from the Holi Dahan Fire and bury the seeds of barley in it. The seeds are then watered daily. At the start of the ceremony, the devout sing songs in praise of Isar or Siva and Gauri. The women decorate their hands with nice designs of henna on their hands and carry gaily painted earthen pots or matkas on their heads. The devout also make clay images of Gauri and Isar. Seven evenings after Holi, the unmarried girls take out a procession with 'Ghudlia' on their heads. This continues for 15 days. The girls receive sweets and cash from their elders. On the final day on Gangaur, the devout take out a procession singing songs on Gauri’s departure carrying images of Gauri. It is a lively procession with gaily decorated camels and horses etc. The procession ends with the breaking of pots and throwing the broken pieces into a pond.
