    Hi Friends!
    I was going thru the thread “When husband and wife speak different Indian languages” I recollected the incident which happened some 1 years ago, Actually though me and my BH has the same mother tongue, he was in north till his schooling as my FIL was working in Indian Army, After coming to Tamilnadu (I can call it a internal south part J), he learn’t tamil very well only to speak, though some time he doesn’t understand few words, still he can find it manageable…
    One day I, my cousin and DH watching TV, actually he was changing the channels, I ask him to hold on with new channels because I can able to see a headline with “Maradaipu” which is heart attack in tamzhi,
    Here the conversation goes..:)
    Me: Raja hold on to the news channel
    DH: Why?
    ME: I saw headline with “Maradaipu” want to know the detail
    DH: that was for MUMBAI, not for Chennai
    ME: ???? What come again.:confused2:
    DH: Hey……that was for MUMBAI, not for Chennai( with 100% confident)
    Me: Do you know what is “Maradaippu”
    DH: Why not it means “Strick” (Banth) correct.,
    Then he explained, “Addaippu” means closing, “Maradaippu” means complete closing of shops…:hide:
    We are mouth shut with his analytic skill towards his (Our) mother tongue.
    Note: off course now he knows the meaning…he..he..:rotfl

    We use to thing, that if someone has told him that they got a "Maradaippu", then he will think that they are going to close thier shop:bonk, that was bit risky :rant....:rotfl:rotfl:rotfl

    reading your this small incident brought all smiles on me :-D :-D :-D
    actually, in a way even i was like that when I had to come back to chennai, luckily it was in childhood, so i could get used to it...even i myself have been the "butt of jokes" amongst my cousin for misunderstanding or pronouncing something else.....i remember once my aunt had told me "velakkumar" (sorry, i still don't know if i am right, but pls understand my plight and understand it :-D) ...and i think it means broom stick...and i wanted to talk in proper tamil, so on one day just to impress them, i asked my cousin "velakku kumar enge" (where is the broomstick, is what I intended to say), but i never knew i split one word into two, and kept on asking, and when they realised it, all hell broke loose and they had to explain to me !!! :-D

    and my brother never had a bit of exposure to written tamil at all, although we spoke only tamil at home....so at a very later stage only he had to opt for tamil as 3rd language due to compulsion....i must admit he picked up written tamil within a span of 1 month, and that too who never knew at all, but in the initial days, when he was learning....he had to spell out "pazham" (fruit)....so he read like this "pa", "zha" "im", "maram" (tree)...:-D :-D/////// pazham when spelt out became maram :-D and he also like me with a serious face kept repeating...and me the genius who already had some experience was correcting him :)

    i can very well relate to your husband's situation :rotfl

    So interesting to read. I also make lot of mistakes in tamil and hindi. Though we speak tamil at home I am never good at it and make lots of mistakes.
    When I got married my husbands family spoke malayalam words mixed wth tamil and you can imagine I did not understand a thing.
    I remember my MIL asking me to pour "1 Muttai Oil" in pan. Muttai means egg in tamil but in malayalam in means spoon. and they were vegetarians. I did not even understand and everyone would make fun!

    hmmm the confusion is bcos in tamil we have multiple meaning for single word though it differ in spelling and some are very much similar to other word and we can use multiple word for single meaning.......:spin correct

    hmmm namaku tamizhae takararu ethula mlayalam veeraya.....(can't understand tamil itself, why to kill malayalam too)......:rotfl

    You know Magee, when we are in 'some other world' even the language we spoke all these years around will sound alien.
    This incident happened when my mom and myself were doing some snacks and my mom told me ( thiruppi podu) to turn it over, I turned the whole 'chappathi making stone' upside down. :biggrin2:

    But should credit your DH for giving a logical explanation to the word, 'maradIppu' :)
