A Houstonian was saved by an Indian doctor at Indraprastha hospital in Delhi.

Reason - Expensive Health Care. As people living here would testify, the health care is system is one of the worst in world, not in terms of technology and facilities but the cost which makes everything un-affordable. It could be an eye specialist or a dental surgeon or general physician or a dermatologist. You have to think twice or thrice before visiting a doctor. Even if one is medically insured, the copay is high in most packages and hence not accessible to poor or even starters.

If there is a fatal or recurring illness, it's even more costlier. Not just the doctor consultations, but even medicines are way too expensive. Solution - Eat healthy, exercise and stay fit right from beginning. This news is a perfect example for the pitfalls in American Health-care System.

Health-care also seems to be one of the top priorities in Election list. I do not think the system is going to change. One HAS to pay premiums and get medically insured, but I am hoping that the charges reduce.

In this video, the man addresses India as third world country. That disappointed me. Here is someone who gets benefited from our hospital and our doctors, undergoes three bypass surgeries and calls it a third world country. At least health-care reaches poor people in our country to some extent. It's an irony because for some fatal incurable illnesses, patients are transported to US.

    Hi Meena,

This is so true. Today, I got my braces on. Few months ago, I broke a baby teeth of mine in trying to pull out a last remaining piece of a coconut. These are the incidents that make you believe in the existence of a power that is beyond you:)

I knew that the baby teeth of mine was nearing its end and I was hoping that I can get a artificial replacement cheap enough.

The day after I broke my teeth, I rushed to my dentist. He did all the tests and told that I needed to see a periodontist because I needed an in plant. That too, not one, but two. Alright, I went to the periodontist. He needed to know "exactly" how much space I have between my tooth and sent me to get an CT scan (read ..expensive) of my teeth. Did that. Came back to the periodontist. Turns out, I don't have enough space to do an in plant in the place I had a teeth!! So, he told that I need to see an orthodontist to create space for the in plants. I go to the orthodontist and he said that the only way to create space is to do full-fledged braces.

So, my treatment plan. Orthodontist to create space -> Periodontist to put inplant -> Dentist to put crown. Total bill ~$10,000.

Along the way, I was painfully made aware that I need to foot bulk of the bill. Sweet!

Only an American Medicare system can rake you a bill worth $10,000 due to a 50cent coconut!

Having a medical insurance in the US is like having a white elephant, atleast thats the way it has worked for me. We end up paying both the insurance company and the doctor.

I had a nasty wisdom tooth that pushed its way and was tearing my cheek. I needed to get it extracted so that I could eat in peace. The dentist examined my teeth and suggested many other things needed to be done before pulling the tooth out. Now I had never had any dental issues earlier, but the long list I was given suggested that all my teeth needed some treatment. And thanks to some foresight I asked them about the total cost before venturing to get anything done. It was such an exhorbitant amount. I could build a home in India with that bill amount!
I waited till I went to India and got the tooth pulled out without any issue.

    Jey and Nivedi,
Dental is the most expensive among all and I seriously wish I could have gotten into medical field instead of Engineering :)
10000$ Are these people kidding ! What makes it so expensive. There were articles on many popular magazines comparing US's and Europe's health-care policies, specifically France in Europe and most of them said, how lousy this one is.
To address the poor in US ( 20000$ annual income), government has decided to pay till 1100$ and they have a special insurance with state which takes 5% os their income and insures them.
This is going to be first tested in Indiana and implemented throughout US.

What about the rest of people, what about those who stay faaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr from their homelands to make career, make money etc..
Health-care in worst cases, especially emergencies will rob them completely. Hope Govt does something about this. What about problems that cannot wait till our next trip to India ?
